
I always start at he tail and work forwards, leaving head til last and being really careful not to get shampoo in the eyes and ears. Wetting the head will cause them to shake and you will get wet. I find it a whole lot easier with another person on hand but it can be done alone (it just takes longer and I get even more wet!)
Make sure you brush the dogs through thoroughly before bathing and you'll probably find you need to brush again after they're dry as bathing & drying will loosen up the dead fur which will then easily be removed. I'd use conditioner on furnishings and tail as it helps prevent matts forming and makes them much more manageable when brushing.
When drying, I start at the tail and work forwards as well (but I don't think it really matters how you do it), brushing through with a large pin brush at the same time (helps to get rid of some of that loosened up dead fur).
