Hi,

My 16 week old slovakian rough haired pointer puppy has an undershot lower jaw and consequently has puncture holes in his upper palette (from his lower canines) and also along the gums in the molars (4 holes in total).

Has anyone experiences of this situation?

Do you mean he's overshot (his top jaw is longer than his lower jaw)? If so then there's hope that it might improve because the lower jaw often continues to grow for longer than the upper. If it doesn't improve you'll probably have to consider having the offending teeth extracted; it'll ruin his showing chances but you wouldn't be breeding from him anyway if his mouth's as bad as you suggest.

Is it a case of upright lower canines too?   If so have a look at this

Our bitch had this until she was about 6 months and it went fine in the end. The bottom jaw grows more slowly than the upper one. Hopefully it should come good for your boy.

I might mean he's overshot! Sorry, new to this. The vet said his lower jaw was undershot so I just went along with that description. I've heard from others with similar problems in the breed, which is a worry as it is new breed to the UK and a small gene pool. They had to have their pups teeth extracted. I certainly won't be breeding from him, and now I know I won't be able to show him either. We're now waiting for the opinion of orthodontist.

did your bitch also have the punctures in the upper palette? I was told it could be quite serious if penetrates to the nasal cavity. Glad to hear yours improved.

Not expereince with your breed but it is quite common in medium length nosed dogs. It does generally grow on by 6 months , I personally wouldn't be taking any major action till this time has passed.

Yes she had small puncture wounds and at one point I was quite worried but it ended up fine. She went on to win 2 RCCs :-)
