hi i am wanting to buy my husband a bloodhound pup and a yorkie pup, these two breeders are eager to part with the pups via a delivery company i pay the delivery company and they collect the pup and delivery it to me, but i have to pay them in full and the give the balance  to the breeder. The breeders wont let us collect the puppies.
One of the adverts says the person comes from islington in london but is now in ireland doing a breeders starch (so she can become a full qualified breeder and she will be  away for a long while this does not sound correct to me. The puppies are advertised very cheap as well, bloodhound pup 200.00 with papers, and a full bred chihaua(sorry cannot spell it) 180.
Do you think i should leave well alone, both delivery charges are 150 yet one is in dublin
- By ShaynLola Date 05.08.08 18:50 UTC
It's a scam.  You will not get a pup but you will be relieved of large sums of cash.

Would you really buy a pup without seeing it with it's mother and the environment in which it was reared?
- By Astarte Date 05.08.08 19:00 UTC
not with a 20ft barge pole. if your after these breeds contact the breed clubs who will direct you to ethical breeders of quality dogs. bloodhounds are v. specialist as i understand it and should come from very experienced homes. you might have to wait a while but whats a few months for the perfect pup for you with a lifetime of breeder support?

also, and please correct me if i'm wrong, were you not asking yesterday about the nature of the breed etc? i would say take a lot more time to research them if thats the case.
- By sara1bee [gb] Date 05.08.08 19:17 UTC
why would you want 2 pups at the same time??!!
- By killickchick Date 05.08.08 20:06 UTC
Please don't have anything to do with ads like this - they are always scams. They want money up front and tell you pup will be delivered to your nearest airport - you will never see the pup or your money! Everything may sound legit and they will often say they have just moved thats why ad and current address are different. Often you will find the same name or contact number on many ads with different breeds - and they are all cheap, too cheap to be true.

DO NOT DO IT

something i also ment to mention!
- By Goldmali Date 05.08.08 20:20 UTC
There's no such thing as a "qualified breeder". Like others have said, this is a scam. Also, any good breeder will NOT sell anyone a pup unless they have MET you first. They will want to ask you questions and check that you are suitable, see you interact with their dogs etc. :)

Two pups at the same time is always a disaster, but two of such different sizes would be even worse. A Bloodhound pup wanting to play with a Yorkie pup (and pups always want to play) could easily kill the Yorkie by accident just by falling on it.

Sam's definitely the best person to help you out as far as Bloodhounds go with advice, breeder recommendations etc, I think she said she PM'd you the other day? Take her advice. :)

This is a complete and utter scam thought up to lure in the ''too good to be true'' crowd
- By crinklecut [gb] Date 05.08.08 20:28 UTC
A 100% scam. These puppies do not even exist. I have seen these sort of adverts, the same advert for the same puppies can turn up in as many as 15 different newspapers - normally freeads papers. I got the shock of my life when I googled the mobile phone number that was given. It turned up around 35 pages of various dog, fish & parrot adverts. All non-existant.
- By Moonmaiden Date 05.08.08 20:39 UTC
Not with a mile long bargepole if the puppies exist they will definitely be puppy farmer products.

Bloodhounds are not bred in huge numbers in the mainland UK & as someone else has written Sam is the one to advise on them, she has stunning dogs

As for Chihuahuas or Yorkshire Terriers £180 + £150 delivery Yer right straight out of the puppy farm in a crate on the ferry(illegally probably)then sold on to anyone who is naive enough to part with their money. their delivery costs will be minimal as they bring over dogs in their 100's not one or two at a time

Definitely a scam

interesting. please can you forward me the details privately of the £200 bloodhound puppies?
- By hilary [gb] Date 06.08.08 23:04 UTC
hi firstly i alerted the local trading standards officer and the police, yes it is a scam, got intouch with all the couriers who have been dragged into this scam as well, having irate people on the line asking where their dog is.

Secondly why two pups of different sizes, well we are not all incompentent, i have two 12 stone newfoundlands who are four and four and half years old and staffy who is nearly eight and now finally a 2lb yorkie aged 5, the big dogs where puppy once and were fine as they were always supervised. The bloodhound is for my husband who loves the outdoors and walking etc, we lost ours on august 2nd he was 12, the little yorkie is a companion for my little girl as she is always left out when they all play due to her size.My dogs are never left with the little one unless my husband or i are there.

Not only did harry passing leave a big gap for me and my husband but also for Vicky the staff who shared every waking day with him and Ruby the yorkie who slept with him, ate with him, they need a new brother to help fill thier gap.
thanks for all the information, i wonder how many people fall for this scam, i hope they get caught soon. I asked for an address a landline and to come and see the pups each come out with a different reason not to give me the information so i have told them i have alerted the police, no more emails from them
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 07.08.08 14:22 UTC
Well done for alerting the police, these people need to be stopped as the poor puppies are the ones who suffer :(
- By theemx [gb] Date 07.08.08 23:41 UTC
In scams like this the puppies are fictional. They want your money up front, there is a huge delivery charge, often they try to get even more money out of you for various paperwork...

And then they vanish, with your money, laughing all the way to the bank.

At no point does any puppy materialise with you, or even exist an dvery often its been found that the pictures of dogs they use in adverts are stolen from real breeders sites off the internet.

Glad you alerted the police.
Sorry to hear about Harry. We lost our 15yr old dog last year, left a gaping hole in the family. Good luck with your search but take your time & you'll find the right one (or two).

Thanks for letting us know about these scandalous actions. I'm appalled.

how is the hunt going?
- By hilary [gb] Date 10.08.08 16:51 UTC
hi well we have been busy looking for a bloodhound, i took on baord a earlier post about getting a rehomed dog, well everyone we found could not mix with other dogs or children. after a long hard chat we decided to change the breed totally as i think we were hoping to find a replacement for Harry like someone said in an earlier post, i appreciate they would not be the same but they would still look a like and bring back all our memories of my old boy. (have to collect his ashes on monday). Well my husband has always fancied an american bulldog so have been looking at some on the internet not ready just yet we think to find a new member of the family we need time to grieve for Harry and so does vicky and ruby who lived with him day in and day out. Will keep you informed thanks for asking.
However we went around all the rehoming places in northamptonshire to see what dogs needed rehoming everyone of the centres said they had no dogs that could be rehomed with other dogs or animals and most could not be rehomed  with children. whta kind of owners out there that do not socialise their lovely dogs with others and with children. i dont let children annoy my dogs when visiting people either control thier children or leave i don not put my dogs out of thier home for badly behaved children.

Hi hilary,

I've just realised you are local to me :-) I'm in Northants too.

Just a thought, but have you considered a rescue greyhound? They are quite large dogs (not as big as a dane of bloodhound admittedly) but quite elegant too, and Northants Greyhound Rescue are very good at matching dogs to homes, and I understand they do often have dogs who are used to children and other animals. They have a lot at the moment waiting to be homed, from quite young (2yo) dogs to more elderly dogs.

If you wanted the contact details for the rescue centre, please PM me as I have the phone numbers of the lady who runs it.

hi claire funny you say that my sister and her husband who are retired are waiting on a home visit as they are going to adopt two grey hounds wont they bit a bit timid with my boisterious newfy's. nice to hear your local. question can you let grey hounds off the lead wont they run away, i wonder if my sister has thought of this
- By ShaynLola Date 11.08.08 19:47 UTC
There is another poster on CD who has two Newfs and a rescue greyhound and I believe they get along famously.

I think some greyhounds can be let off lead but I guess a lot depends on the individual dog.
- By hairyloon [gb] Date 12.08.08 10:34 UTC
I've got your PM hilary, I'll get the details tonight (it's all at home) and send them to you tomorrow.

I think greyhounds can 'look' a bit shy and timid, partly because of their elegance and light build, but it depends on the character of the dog, some will be quite bouncy and boisterous. I'm not sure about the off lead thing, as ShaynLola says, it will depend on the individual dog really.

if your after a rescue american you'll not be short of options, there are a lot out there. i'd suggest a specific breed rescue, they tend to get more of the non behavioural issue rescues if that makes sense- you see a lot more of  change in circs and moving overseas rehomes rather than strays and abandons.

Definately a scam which a few years ago, i unfortunatly fell for. Was new to the pc, looking for a Chihuahua pup, when i came across an ad for puppies. It seemed genuine, gave lots of info and the emails were friendly. Having bought my previous, kc reg chi bitch for £350, about 5 years ago, i couldnt believe the prices of them now, so these pups being £370 was very appealing. Everything was great, the emails were friendly and asking me lots of questions but the pups would be shipped from South Africa. As i said i was new to all this and not bought a pup for a while so i thought all this was the norm. Well to cut a long story short i ended up sending ALOT of money...nearly £1000 and was promied pups were in airport, then on way, each time needed more money to send them. Even spoke to them on phone. As you can guess i eneded up with no money and no pups.
I have learned my lesson and only buy from repituable breeders
- By Brainless [gb] Date 29.08.08 09:07 UTC
Did you not realise that a pup bought from abroad would have to go into Quarantine though?  for me those foreign based ones are a give away on that alone?
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 29.08.08 09:43 UTC
Wow, don't know how people can be fooled so easily?  Just to bring a Pomeranian in from abroad for the delivery only from Spain I was quoted nearly £500.00 so the payment of £370 is a give away right from the beginning I would have thought?

It's so awful that people prey on people this way.
- By POMZO [gb] Date 31.08.08 16:19 UTC
That is a old scam used, well known of buy people in dogs. Never buy a dog unless you can see it and it's parents. Unless you are buying for show them make sure you have everything in writing and a contract and referances from other buyers and sellers.

As i said, i was new to the internet and buying pups from there. I bought my first Chi from Scotland without seeing her first, but exchanged lots of pictures, phone calls etc....which is what happened with this one abroad. So i foolishly assumed it would be the same. Im usually very cautious, so must of been having a very off day. That was about 4 years ago now and ive learnt my lesson....In fact can spot a scam a mile off and have saved other people alot of money  :)
