Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Paperwork to new owners
- By koolcad Date 11.08.08 13:34 UTC
Hi there,
I was just wondering what paperwork you gave to new puppy owners.
I know what I got from my dogs breeder, all I really needed, but basic. I'd like to do it a bit differently for my pups, to stamp my own mark.  What I'm planning on doing is putting together a small folder with photos of parents and pups, particularly their individual pup, pedigree, litter screening eye certificate plus KC registration - if not in booklet, then via post direct.  Plus puppy feeding, etc information sheet, contract (still trying to work out having viewed the many discussions on this forum).
Do you include documents for the parents, ie hip scores and eye certificates?  Or do you just show these documents to new owners and leave it at that?
Many thanks for your comments and possible suggestions for things to include.

Hi Koolcad
We have a booklet that I made up a few years ago
It has lots of information in it including:
Info about us as breeders
A soppy poem about the commitment they both now have to each other
Pedigree certificate
pictures and info about the parents,
the puppy's routine up till they leave
a weight chart from birth up till when they leave with gaps so they can carry on adding info up to 2 years
info on worming and flee treatment
info on house training and behavior
insurance info and my breeds club info
then on the back page I stick a CD in plastic case with photo's from birth till the day they leave.

We get them to fill in a separate contract
And as regards the documents for the parents if the new owners want more info then we usually show them the certificates.

Hope this all helps
will be happy to send you a copy of our contract if you are interested just pm me :o)

As well as KC reg, pedigree, and contract I feel it is important to give BVA leaflets on Hip dysplasia Scoring and Eye scheme and diseases, andy info on other health issues in the breed.  Also copy of the bred standard, membership forms for the breed club/s, Breed Club code of ethics, good dog care book.  List of training clubs or ringcraft from KC.

In addition to above I put in a copy of the perfect puppy (gwen bailey) also printed my own pedigrees with watermarks of parents behind their names on it on good quality paper, this was a big hit with new owners as was the CD of pics as above. I also setup a shared online photo album with Picasa where they add pics and can see how the littermates are progressing, there are still new pics going on there now (they are 12 months next week).

That's a great idea of a shared photo site
Might look into doing that with my next litter :-)

For my puppy pack (paperwork not other goodies) are:
KC doc
6 gen pedigree (Biggest my software can do)
Small book on the breed
CD of pics of puppies, parents and grand parents
Weight records
Injection records (If old enough)
Worming records
Microchip change over form, signed
Eye certificate of puppies and photocopies of parents (I have had people ask for them before when I didn't include them)
Contract
Feeding sheet
Book of the bitch (Bitch puppies only)
Details on the good citizen scheme and dog training
Contract details if they need to get in touch, also on CD ( I have kept one phone number for dogs only and will never change it)

Thankfully I only have small litters and not every year otherwise along with the other bits it would cost me a fortune

I think it is nice to put your own stamp on it.  On my folders they have a slip cover at the front so I can put a front cover with the dogs official name and our kennel logo to make it look polished.

Thank you all, there are some really good ideas here, including some that wouldn't have occurred to me.  Many thanks, lots for me to think about.

I have a picture of his Dad!! I meet Mum, a sheet of advice (which was really useful) some food, piece of blanket and the KC stuff. Plus a request to keep his breeder informed of how he has got on. The advice was on diet, exercise, and other stuff and his Dad picure is in a small book we have kept with diet, injections toys ect cause were sad people..

Not a breeder, just an owner but our breeders have photocopied these documents and included them in the pack :)

Don't forget to include a list of plants that are poisonous to dogs, (can be downloaded, just type 'plants that are poisonous to dogs', into google), food that is poisonous to dogs, (chocolate, grapes, currants, raisins, onions) and also advice on keeping puppies away from electrical leads, (for some reason, they just love to chew them), and the cupboard under the sink where most people keep the bleach and household cleaners etc. Also, don't forget to tell people how absolutely lethal anti-freeze is. It tastes sweet and is deadly.

I Think this is an Excellent Idea, Keep them coming,
I am just starting to prepare my puppy packs too, so it good to know the essentials. ;)

In addition to all the info above I also added in a leaflet on Keeping dogs cool in the summer and Dogs in HOt Cars.

Surprising how many people who like the hot weather don't realize how it can be bad for their dogs

We had all the things mentioned by other posters which I read avidly on the way home and a year later still look at from time to time.  We also have my boys first collar - a little plaited wool loop that wouldn't fit round his nose now!!

One of the things I didn't write down at the time but asked my breeder about recently was the order of birth and time of birth.  I knew she'd have it and sure enough, within minutes, she'd checked her book and got back to me.  It's not terribly relevant but interesting and, as he was about to celebrate his first birthday, the children wanted to know the exact time to wish him a Happy First Birthday!!

As a new owner you don't want to tempt fate and, right from the mating through to 6 weeks old, we tried so hard to a keep a lid on our excitement but still we wanted to be fully prepared.  This is a great time to reach puppy owners as they are desperate for info, very keen to learn, not sleep deprived, and not sidetracked by that gorgeous bundle of puppyness!!

Here's a few things we were told/given in advance.  What actual size the pup will be at collection time (to source best mode of transport), what puppy books you recommend (read these before the pup arrives), regular reminders to arrange insurance (to ensure continuous cover), info about worming regime (so we could buy stuff online in advance), dates of injections (so we could plan with our own vet and get training classes/ringcraft booked).  I'm sure there was more that I asked, and got answered, but in addition to the knowledge that I could contact the breeder at any time for help and advice; several of the puppy owners from this litter had either met or made themselves known to each other and we spent the early months emailing and comparing notes - 13 months later we still do!!
