Topic Dog Boards / Showing / Height of an American Cocker
- By M_A_S [gb] Date 11.08.08 16:20 UTC
Hi All,
Milly our Yankee will be 6 months old next wednesday and she is already 13 1/2 inches tall and the breed standard recommends 13 1/2 to 14 1/2 inches for bitches.
How much more is she likely to grow ??? if she goes over the breed standard height how much will this effect her in the show ring as far as judges are concerned.
I was also told that she is long in the back which they people concerned said is not good and on taking a measurement she is 14 inches from her shoulder blades to the base of her tail, how much is this likely to effect her in the ring as far as judges are concerned.
Many thanks
Mike

Hi,
For my bred bitches is meant to be 13 inches breed standard, but most are over that it the ring.

In my bred they are meant to be square, the same height as length, ie 13" floor to shoulders and 13" from chest to bottom.
I think in my breed the fact they are square is more important that 1/2 inch of extra height.
If I have a puppy that has reached height I swope to adult food, lower in protien. :-)
I'm sure someone with Cockers will be along soon. :-)
I think most judges are more forgiving if a bitch is long, but not a dog.

My male American cocker is about 15 or 15.5 inches tall, males I think are supposed to be 14-15 inches so he is a bit big for his height. I'm not sure when he reached his adult height I'm afraid, but I know my Cavalier girl was full grown (also a bit big for the breed!) by about 7 or 8 months so if your girl has done her growing early she won't necessarily go over height.

Height in my breed is critical. My 12 month old bitch reached her present hgt at 6.5 months, she is 14 inches in hgt, which is just short of maximum. To say I panicked a bit was an understatement but she shot up between 5-6months and is now filling out. On seeing a friends pup recently shoot up at 7 months I now am of the opinion that different lines mature at different rates. Did you breed her yourself or what deos her breeder say?
