Topic Dog Boards / Health / 1 yr old Vizsla with fluid on elbows
- By Gem1802 [gb] Date 08.08.08 12:52 UTC
Hi, I have never used this site before but it seems to be full of knowledgable people!!

My 14 month old Vizsla has been lame on her right fore on and off for a couple off weeks so I took her to the vets. They x-rayed both front elbows but saw no real abnormality, he did however say that she has an amount of fluid on both elbows - more on one than the other.
He has recommended rest (can still walk on lead) for a period of about 1 month (easier said than done), this is coupled with a mild dose of Anti Infllammatories.

Has anyone had any experience of this sort of thing and does it usually right itself?

Thanks

Also the vet has recommended that I feed Hills j/d as it is good for joints etc.

Might not be the same but I have had a couple of dogs (and know of others) with fluid lumps on elbows and it has been due to them throwing themselves down onto hard surfaces, they have all cleared up - may have taken a couple of months- but none needed treatment or rest, just time for the swelling to go down. I certainly never felt the need for special food either.

Has your vet taken a some fluid out for analysis?

could be a tiny sliver of bone that's chipped off that's agravating the joint.

Might be worth asking for samples to be sent off for growth to see what's causing the fluid.
