Help my bitch gave birth 9 days ago and has stayed in the bed constantly with her babies and now she has bed sores, any ideas, thankyou.

What bedding is she on? I would get her out every hour and take her round the garden for ten min's. Hopefully when she comes back she will change position and that will help.
No doubt as the pups get older and she feels she can leave them for longer she will improve. Is she short coated? Has the skin broken? if not then massage the sore areas with a little talc (Not too much ) get a hypoallergenic one! The massage will help the circulation and blood flow to the area. It's really just a case of trying to get her to change her possition as often as possible.
Good luck

Hi, thanks for your reply, she is a long haired dog and the skin has broken, she is lying on a fluffy fur bed.

If the skin is broken then don't use talc. I would get her to the vet , a long haired dog should not get bedsores it may be hot spots and they can be a nightmare to clear up if they get too bad. Where abouts are they?

I have on some occasions (currently also) found that the birth fluids have been so caustic as to cause sores on the backs of the thighs nearest the vulva.  This is where the coat became soaked during whelping and the hair has come away and left the area sore.

I have used Vaseline or baby oil on the area after cleansing carefully.  Keep checking the trousers for any gunk from the post whelping discharge and keep the area clean and combed, and cut away any straggly bits of fathering that gets mucky.
