I have been with ,what i thought was a good insurance company, they have paid out without fail for one of my girls whos been ill for nearly a year, when i went to insure my new puppy (large breed also)they said they werent doing large breeds insurance anymore??!! ,anyone else had this problem?
- By Astarte Date 06.08.08 21:46 UTC
who was it?
- By willowsmum [gb] Date 06.08.08 21:46 UTC
Am i allowed to say?
- By Tigger2 Date 06.08.08 21:51 UTC
why not? We often discuss different insurers on here - only time you can't say is if you run the company.
- By willowsmum [gb] Date 06.08.08 21:58 UTC
ok thats fine  it was sainsburys  needless to say ive had to hunt for a new policy for puppy so ended up with M&S they do extra dog discounts which is handy unfortunately my girl whos ill has to stay with sainsburys, apparently this is still ok
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 06.08.08 22:06 UTC
That's ridiculous, but I had heard this too. One of mine is with Sainsbury's , the other is with M&S because the premium went up so much in the first year with sainsbury - funnily enough she is a large breed :-(

I found this which allows you to compare different policy cover, there is also a cat version
- By willowsmum [gb] Date 06.08.08 22:20 UTC
My girl whos ill must nearly be up to her limit which is per illness but sainsburys hadnt put the premiums up at last renewal ,now ive been informed it will jump substantially next renewal I wonder what substantially means???!!!!! they didnt say. Dakkobear thats a good link saved it on favs for look at in detail tomorrow
- By Angels2 Date 07.08.08 07:37 UTC
We were with Sainburys for both my boys but we moved the eldest to Axa and the youngest has to remain put. They put our premiums up by almost 50% and when I rang to enquire they said it was all insurance companies and they appreciated it was alot but they wouldn't budge :-(

eta - We had made no claims and the youngest is a cav 8 months!!! :-o
- By jane [gb] Date 07.08.08 08:34 UTC
I have just moved one of mine from Sainsburys because of the hike in premiums. My other 2 are with M&S. One of those had a big increase at renewal and I rang and queried it and they reduced it for me. I have all of them with M&S now. Claims have always been paid and I have never had any problems.

Has anyone cancelled a policy after claims? my girl who ive been claiming for will be up to her limit very soon so im going to have to pay for her drugs myself, atopica which are very pricey,i feel that as im going to have to do this why have her insured with this company anymore and pay the premiums. i cant insure her with anyone else.the problem she has will be ongoing and shes only 2 at the moment.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 07.08.08 13:28 UTC
Yes but we have now got Petplan and they will not cover his leg so its down to us, but we were so p---ed with EP&L we took both dogs anyway. We waited nearly three months for OCD an abcess with Petpaln took a week to pay out.

I am with Healthy Pets, I have 3 of them insured with them and it is just under £18 a month altogether, this gives a payout of £5000 per condition for life with a £50 excess.  I was with M&S for the first year, but my girls policy over doubled and was over £29 just for 1 dog!!  I haven't had to claim yet, but I believe they are very good at paying out and quite quick too.

Healthy pets sounds really good, it would have been 80 nearly 100 a month for my 2, since im looking in to getting another pup i might see what there quotes are like, do they insure large breeds and has anyone had any problems? do they pay vets direct?

Thanks Louise

Just had a look at a quote and whats the difference between dogue de bordeaux (imp) and Dogue de bordeaux declassified?? Quotes are really good under 50 per month for 4 dogs on gold cover.
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 07.08.08 15:04 UTC
There is quite a difference in quote prices for the imp and declassified, 39 a month imp and 24 declassified.
- By Astarte Date 07.08.08 15:08 UTC

> it would have been 80 nearly 100 a month for my 2,

ouch, with who? whole of life cover for Tio is about £23 a month (with a cruciate tear) with more than. my parents insisted on keeping paying it so at the mo i know nothing about insurance.... mum and dad are far less for the girls with a similar breed to yours

These insurances its a nightmare. Have just not renewed with Kc very expensive £400 per annum even if that is all of life and no upper limit.
Have taken More Than 18.00 pm with £7000 per illness through out life.  thats for GSD . 8.00 pm for pom/chi same policy. Just hope that covers it.

I am trying to decide on which insurance to get for my new pup, who I pick up on saturday.

The best quote I've had so far is with AXA at just short of £24.
Has anyone used them and had to claim? Are they good at paying out?

The M&S one wasn't much more and looks quite good.
Pet plan looks good but is quite a bit more expensive.

It's such a mine field. I'm not sure which to get
- By Pedlee Date 07.08.08 16:26 UTC
I'm with AXA for 3 of my dogs, have made claims and they have paid out quickly. With M&S for 2 others due to ongoing conditions and had no problems when AXA were the underwriters. Now the underwriters have changed I've had queries from them when making claims.
- By suejaw Date 07.08.08 16:38 UTC
I'm with Petplan and they have recently hiked up the monthly payment. I called them to find out why and they reckon due to the fact vets charge more and that i live in an area which is expensive they can justify charging an extra £10p/m. They wouldn't budge.

I know its one of the best but one of the most expensive and i am on the top insurance plan as Bernese are known for numerous of problems and i want to make sure i am fully covered with unlimited bills each and every year.
- By Astarte Date 07.08.08 17:16 UTC
mum and dad say that more than have always been very prompt in paying up as well, which is good.
- By Hugos There [gb] Date 07.08.08 17:27 UTC
I've just picked up a leaflet for pet plan at the vet and there is a list of 'select breeds,' these are breeds that they believe cost more in vet fees.
One of the dogs on the list is the Bernese. Having looked at the quotes they charge a lot more for these breeds.
I am guessing that other companies have a similar policy.

Luckily for me my breed isn't on the list although a very similar breed is.
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 07.08.08 18:47 UTC
Bordeaux is in the specialist breed thing so i think it was an extra ten pound more so something like 46 per month for just him, think ill go with healthy pets they seem good value for money, Still dont know the difference between imp and declassified might have to ring them.
- By Harley Date 07.08.08 18:55 UTC
I have our GR with M&S and our terrier cross with Argos platinum cover. Both insurers paid out quickly and with no fuss. My unexpected claim with Argos was made two days after the qualifying period and caused no problems at all.

> Still dont know the difference between imp and declassified might have to ring them

hmmm...maybe between ones imported from the continent and those bred here? all i can think of as maybe they are concerned about the imports having been exposed to other things? but then that s what pet passports and quarentine are for...
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 08.08.08 11:14 UTC
It says on their pedigree under breed dogue de bordeaux (imp) maybe now they have come off the import reg its different. Think will have to ring them.
- By willowsmum [gb] Date 08.08.08 15:52 UTC
What a minefield I had a look over my policy today and sainsburys is underwritten by AXA and if i cancel my policy, if ive made a claim, i still have to pay my premiums, wouldve been better just paying for the treatment, thought this was why we have insurance. I cant understand about the imports but  i suppose there may be things imported dogs can carry and/or have that we dont in this country. apart from rabies are the requirements for vaccines different abroad?
- By Houndlover [gb] Date 08.08.08 21:20 UTC
I have my 21 month Greyhound insured with Tesco's.
Extra level cover ( up to £4000 per condition no time limit- claim excess £60
I took the policy out when they were offering a 40% discount online so currently pay £13.88
per month

Have any of you checked with your insurance companies if they cover you if you show your dogs. Apparently quite few will not cover the dog if you show it as it is deemed to be worth more than the average pet. If the dog wins a prize of any kind at show you will not be covered at all.
- By hilary [gb] Date 11.08.08 20:03 UTC
hi i just went on there to insure my newfys it will cost me 29.96 each dog thats very expensive its it because they are a large breed
- By willowsmum [gb] Date 11.08.08 20:41 UTC
Polly ,I couldnt see anything on my sainsburys policy about showing dogs . just the usual exclusions i.e dangerous dogs etc I show mine perhaps its not one of those clauses that are "hidden surprises" !Didnt think to check M&S
Where did you go Hilary? The gentleman at sainsburys said they werent doing large breeds anymore and yes itll be more expensive for large breeds If they need drugs they need larger doses same with anaesthesia  etc so vet fees are more.
