Topic Dog Boards / Showing / small niggle after Paignton today
- By Lorripop [gb] Date 05.08.08 21:05 UTC
Just needed to air my grumble after showing today - nothing major but its niggled me.

We were judged by a lovely lady judge and well known, I had watched her judge the Poms so i could see how she got the dogs to move and how she handled them - I was impressed by her time taken over each dog and how she wasn't hurried in making her final decision on the winner of each class and moved them several times just to be sure.

The judge then did Yorkshire terriers, we were next so i was getting my girlie ready and couldn't see if she took same amount of time on them or not.

It then came to our breed (not many of us) and by this time it was 3.30ish, much later than we had anticipated to be in the ring. Well i've never felt so rushed before when showing (only a year). We got what i felt was a quick once over on the table and whilst one exhibit was taking thier dog off ready to walk she was calling the next exhibit to get their dog ready on the table. We were asked only to do a straight up and down and then re join the line. We did all go round together twice at the beginning and then when she placed us, presumably to be sure, but more individual trotting round the ring would have been nice without distraction of dogs in front and behind etc.

I dont feel cross with the judge as she was lovely but i do feel annoyed that she obviously hadn't been given enough time to do all the classes she had and so had to rush through. When you pay your money, drive a fair distance, wait for a long time and then get what i felt was a minimal amount of the judges time it seems unfair.

The placings wouldn't have changed even she went over dogs for half an hour or so and i was happy with my 2nd place but would have liked more of her time on my dog and everyone elses in our class.

This is not unusual when a judge is doing a few breeds, they enjoy the first breed and the luxury of taking time over each dog, but forget to keep a check on their average time per dog . A job that a good steward could have and should have done for her, if they checked the entry number and worked out an average per dog for ALL the breeds being judged then this should never happen. It not only spoils the day for the later exhibitors, but also reflects badly on the judges capabilities.

She probably didn't realise that it was so late and was told to get a move on by the stewards. Did your BOB make it into the group ring? She would have been called other things if she had held you all up a bit and the BOB didn't make it. :-( It's seems like a case of damned if she did and damned if she didn't. She most likely wanted to see your BOB in the big ring.

Yes the BOB did make it to the group but suppose it was gonna be tight as by the time we were done, even though hurried, it was nearly 4pm and she had stake classes to do who were waiting before we went in the ring but were after us.

never mind - another day another show, actually b'mth this sunday but only a 2min drive - hooray

We had the most ignorant judge I have ever been under, well known alrounder.
She had no manners at all.
We were all beckoned and pointed at,she didnt appear to even want to judge the breed.
We werent people showing our dogs we were sheep for her.
it isnt bad feelings as we did ok,but I wont go under her again simply because she had no manners,
a please or thankyou costs nothing.

Had to go and see who your judge was Carolyn and agree - I would not enter under her again either :-)

This Lady is always respectful  to exhibitors when judging, Sir and Madam and
Thank you, have judge with her many time's and also exhibited under her,
On Tuesday the Group judging was changed to the indoor rings at short notice
as the outside tenting where the group was going to be judged  had no side
cover, so the judge may have been asked by show management to speed up,
I judged in the ring next to her,in one of the rings that was used for the Group judging

Sorry, I disagree when I went under her she barely went over my dog on the table and turned her back when I was moving her. Very rude I paid my £20 so should get a fair look. She did this with several of the dogs and I did not get a good morning or a thankyou she only asked how old she was. This was the only breed she judged that day so not rushed. I'm not the only person who has had this experience under this judge, I will never show under her again.

We got what i felt was a quick once over on the table and whilst one exhibit was taking thier dog off ready to walk she was calling the next exhibit to get their dog ready on the table.

This particular part is just common courtesy to the judge though -as soon as the dog in front of you starts moving you should set your dog up on the table, so that the judge won't need to waste any time. (I.e. can go straight from one to the next without any wait.) Only normally the stewards make sure to tell the next person. :)

Yes i agree with this but in our breed we are always instant getting our dogs on the table as soon as the previous dog is put to the floor - i found it strange that she was calling us to do it instead of concentrating on the present dog.

She did say 'sir & madam' and gave clear instructions but all too rushed and hurried.

Brenda was not meant to be our (pom) Judge and she was stepping in as we were meant to have zena thorn-andrews as our judge, So she was at a dissadvantage already. Paignton should have made alternative arrangements for another judge to help out and not just given Brenda the poms as well as two other breeds and the stakes classes as well. it was un fair of the commite on Brenda and the exhibitors.
I would urge you to go under her if you get the chance as i most definatly will be. She is a lovely lady and judges the dog and not the face. She is excellent with naughty and nervous puppies and above all fair. We got 2nd in Minor puppy dog ;)
