Topic Dog Boards / Health / A question of poo...please help!

Sorry for the grim subject, but I hope someone can help...

Our rescue Samoyed seems to have a bit of a sensitive stomach. I have noticed that her poos start off firm but by the end the poo is soft and pate like (sorry for the graphic description!) This is not always the case but does seem to be happening quite frequently.

She is fed on AG Lamb & Rice which she loves, my other 2 dogs are on the same and they have lovely firm poos all the time. Megan's poos are also lighter in colour than the other 2 and I don't know why ?! In her previous home her owners had a burger van and fed her all the leftover burgers and sausages, could this have caused a lasting effect ?

She doesn't really get many treats, just an occasional rawhide stick or a small bit of ham, could this cause the poo to be like this? Do you think I should look at changing her food, I know AG do a "sensitive" version. Has anyone experienced the same problem with poos before ??

The difference in colour is likely to be to di with ehr not digesting it as well or the speed it goes through.  I would initially remove all other treats (rawhides often make dogs poo like this in my expereince).  A little extra fibre might help.

Hi

I have the same problem with one of my dogs.  I know feed him 6 pieces of Feelwells every day and touch wood the problem has been solved.

It could be the food, what works well for one dog may not work well for another.

My two dogs eat exactly the same and have a very varied diet.  One of them poos once or twice a day - 99.9% of the time it is very solid.  My other dog poos three or four times a day and it is almost always on the soft side.  Her digestive system just seems to work a lot faster and the poo is softer because it does not sit in the intestinal track as long.  No relationship whatsoever to food - just the way her system works.  She also has tended to have a bit of bother with her anal glands which (knock wood) seems to have gone away with the addition of some oat bran to her food.

Thanks everyone for your replies, much appreciated.

I think it might just be her digestive system then - perhaps the years of sausages and burgers have caught up with her?! It's strange as the poos she does in the evening are usually a lot firmer than the ones in the morning - I thought it was usually the other way round.

I'll cut out the rawhide chews - does anyone know of any other "chewy" treats for sensitive stomachs or am I best to leave the treats completely ??

Helen its funny you should say about the feelwells treats, I actually have some of those in the cupboard - I'll try some of them with Megan. Thanks again! :-)
