Topic Dog Boards / Health / Limping again!
- By Dogz Date 06.08.08 09:53 UTC
Any ideas....My boy is limping again, he's had a limp on and off for ages, he then had a grass seed which made his paw swell and ended up with a GA to investigate and clean.
Well all seemed well for a ccouple of weeks and now he's been limping intermittently (yes same leg) today it seems more than ever??
THe paw is okay just not convinced I understand what this limp is about as it comes and goes.

He's a small terrier, have just been to vet for adolescent check on other and he thinks it could be luxating patella so I must watch and see :(
This poor dog is one unlucky boy....npo wonder he doesn't like the vets.

NO, at least not yet as I didn't take him in just spoke about it.
Yep, Jack is the dog that it all happens to as well.......
Poor thing,it's not the money he is insured, it is the misery for them.
So no doubt we will learn.

yeah after speaking to the specialist who did the op today i said to him it was so pitiful to watch my two year old dog limp and struggle to get up the stairs. the reply i got was that its not actually causing the dog a problem it just is like having a disfigurment. were as i disagree i dont believe my dog would limp if there was no pain there

my dog has a limp and everytime i decide to get it investigated it stops. it doesnt stop her running like a whippet around the woods and its no worse when she gets back, its strange, hubby seems to think shes lying on it. i will see how it goes then decide, but how long to leave it for thats my worry

i think if del had never had the op i would not be as bothered but is that not the reason i got the op to stop the limp?????
if anyone had said to me he may still limp after the op i would never have got it done.
i would def look into getting your dog checked tho just so you no. this happened to us but as soon as we took del to vets they said to us he has a dislocated knee. if its just a little limp it may be just something stuck in her foot but in my case the dog hold his leg right out and refuses to bend it

tess can bend her leg, run up the stairs, jump on the sofa, run, the limp is not stopping her do anythink i just dont understand why shes doing it, we did mention it to the vet when we took her for injection, he moved her leg about and checked her over and could not find anythink, its just knowing what to do, she will probally need x-rays etc,,,,what would any of you do? thanks

My terrier x collie had the knee op and recovered very well despite having a couple of serious knocks during the recovery (he had his in winter and slipped on ice into solid objects)...

My other dog has been having intermittent lameness with no obvious outward cause. The lameness shifts between front legs and hind legs. Sometimes he is so sore and stiff it takes a while before he can walk properly. He had to go to the vet for hip score anyway so he had all the joints and long bones x-rayed. Hips are fine however he has low bone density. Vet says bones on x-ray should be a nice white colour..however his were gray which meant (in her opinion) his bones were not strong enough. My boy is quite big  28kg and likes to run and play a lot , he is 18 months. The vet says because his bones are not as strong the exercise he gets is causing pain because of the impact. Vet also says he could be prone to easy fracture. He is on calcium and has to go back for recheck soon as his tablets are finished.

Not sure if this could affect a smaller dog but if anyone has a bigger one with lameness that can't be explained ...this is something to think about.

28kg...that is a big dog.
if it was my dog and the limp had been going on a while i would def get him in for x rays, however if its just been a couple of weeks i would leave it a bit longer. you say he still runs wild and jumps around...is this still the case when he has the limp or just before and after. just my dog used to still do everything go out shooting and could jump my 6 foot fence. however when his leg did go i just felt sorry for him cos felt awful making him do stuff when he was limping cos he is so eager to please when working

My dog who had the knee op still runs and plays like mad. He did however for the first 6 months or so have the lameness like you describe with your dog. I had to take him in two or three times for a recheck and the vet said she could see no reason for the limp . He did not give an indication of pain when moving the joint but still would limp. Only explanation that was given to me at the time was this: to fix the knee they essentially had to remove a triangle of bone (basically a break) recovery takes a while and dogs are prone to hide pain especially when there are other dogs in the house. And also that like if we break a bone sometimes even after it is healed we have the odd twinge. And given the fact he was using the bad leg straight away and because the site of the op is a mobile joint....even on cage rest ...that sore spot is getting movement and rubbing which slows the healing a bit ....(maybe not slows healing...but more relief from the soreness)

Even now he has moments where I can tell he is sore. And every now and again he will do a few hops on that leg, like he did when the knee was dislocating. Wee dog is also supposed to be taking glucosimine (sp) but it upset his stomach and he lost too much weight on it. (Supposed to be 11kg went down to 9kg because he was too sick to eat.)

The other dog with the weak bones is on supplements and restricted exercise (grassy areas only and no jumping )

so do you think this is what could be happening to my dog. however it was about 11 months ago he was operated on and he limps more now than he did before. do you think it could get better on its own,. just i really dont no what to do anymore

not sure really after 11 months he should be better. I would try going to another vet...explain he had the op and you are concerned. Hopefully they will listen better and maybe come to a different conclusion than your current vet. If they are not listening to you and fobbing you off perhaps a fresh start is what is needed. After all like you said (I think) you are with the dog all the time. You know what he was like compared to what he IS like now. If you have a niggling feeling something is wrong....then go with it.

I must say when ever I have ANY concern about my dogs health no matter how small it is.....and even if it seems stupid or others don't see it....I have in the end NEVER been wrong.....and because I persist.....found quite a few illnesses and injuries before they were serious. Go with your gut....if the vet wont listen.....seek a second opinion....you would do it for yourself....do it for the dog...:) :) :)

thankyou, i have rang another specialist and he is going to see him mon. on the phone he says that he should not be limping. the other vet said because my dog was not screaming it ment he was in no pain but i dont belive all dogs scream cos they are in pain. springers are hardy dogs and my dogs seem to be able to take alot.  my bitch used to chew clumps of hair from his ears and he never criend yet i dont believe it was not hurting him. hopefully this vet will give me some answers as a also want him to have a look at his before pics as i am not convinced he should have been operated on at all. especially his left leg as he never ever was lame in it.
