We had our pups dew claws done at 3 days old.
I noticed today that quite a few of them still have a dew claw on their left front foot.
What should I do? Is this common? I have advertised them as dewclawed and the first ones are leaving this weekend.

It sounds as though whoever did them (and you!) forgot to do the final check of each puppy to make sure all claws had been removed. There's nothing that can be done at this stage - if the new owners want to have the remaining dewclaw removed it'll have to be done under a GA when the pup's older. I'd remove the reference to dewclawing from the advert pdq, and make sure that the owners are aware that the dewclaws are still there.

Thanks for the reply. It was the vet that did them and since I have never done this before I assumed he knew what he was doing.
TBH I am disgusted that they didn't check (vet or his nurse)

I'm surprised that you didn't notice yourself either, to be honest; you'd have been clipping the pups' claws every few days, after all. It just shows how easy it is to miss them.

Is it not perhaps they were cut but not properly? that perhaps could go a little to explain why they were missed.

I cant understand how you missed them. Did you not check the wounds everyday to make sure they were healing ok?

I wouldn't be wanting to use that vet again if they have missed them or not done them properly, it's not exactly rocket science!

it is possible that they were removed, but if the root of the claw is left behind they can grow back, when they do grow back they can often be mis-shapen too. maybe that is why you only noticed it now as they were all removed at the time and take a good few weeks to grow back, just a possibility. i have just had mine done (though i do them at 1 day old & only the rear ones too). i checked and double and triple checked them when i got home.
As this is the first time it is all new to you so as you say you would expect the vet to do his job correctly, just learn from it and in the future always check them when you get home.
just ensure that the buyers know if their chosen puppy is one with dew claws remaining. :)

I would mention it to the vet - and maybe suggest that when the pups are old enough he re-does it free of charge :)

some of our puppies only had dew claws on the front, only 1 out of the 6 had them on all four feet.  our neighbour had her 4 years olds dew claws removed not long ago, its quite a nasty and expensive operation  when they are older.  our bitch didnt have hers removed when we bought her, but they have not given her any problems. :-)

My girl had her Dew claws removed recently, she repeatedly kept ripping them, so decided long term it would be kinder to get them removed.
My girl recovered quite quickly, so we were lucky. at least she won't be in pain now from a ripped dew claw :) it is on the expensive side £200 ish, not as bad as my last vets who quoted me £250!!

I think it would be helpful here is people differentiated between hind dewclaws that some pups are born with which can vary from being little more than skin tags to proper digits, and the normal fore claws, which most every dog is born with (I did have one pup once born without!).

In some breeds front dews are never removed and others like to have them off.  Rear ones unless specifically called for in the breed standard are usually removed as they often cause problems.  In many peoples experiences front ones are often used and do not often cause issues, other than scratching the owner.

My Rottie still had her hind dew claws, which were floppy bits of skin (like toes without bones if that makes sense). She never actually caught them but I was so worried that she would, when she went in to be spayed the verts removed them at the same time. They actually took much longer to heal than the spay scar. About 3/4 weeks as it was winter and despite having booties it was really difficult to keep the dressings dry. Luckily our veterinary nurse was our lunchtime dog walker, so she used to re-dress the areas for free.
