Topic Dog Boards / Health / dalmatin having phantom pregnany, HELP

hi, is there any way to stop the phantom pregnancy, its making my bitch- pasha so sad. she has not put weight on this time, but her teats are very large and she is leaking so bad her bed is soaking wet every morning.
she has hardly eaten this last few days all she does is lay on her bed looking misserable. she does not want to leave the house at all, we have to drag her out to go toilet.
is there a natural remady,( please dont use short hand as i dont under stand it ) when i do drag her out for a walk she has become aggresive towards other dogs too.
had hoped to breed her but maybe she should get spayed for her sake, dont agree with it really but its heart braking seeing her look so sad and deppressed

Poor girl! :-( It sounds like a real bad one, so you should take her to the vet. You'll also have to be cruel to be kind, I'm afraid. She mustn't be allowed to brood and mope; give her low-protein food and lots of exercise - keep her occupied and busy to keep her mind off how rubbish she's feeling.

How old is she?

Can I ask why you want to breed from her ? Has she been shown & done well at shows & had all the health tests done(BAER testing, Hip Scored etc)

The only 100 % way to stop future phantom pregnancies is spaying, phantom pregnancies are actually quite normal for bitches if they live in a pack, they serve to allow the non breeding bitches to suckle any puppies in the pack.

Reading your other thread she also has some temperament problems, in which case you'd be far better off NOT breeding from her. I'd get her spayed for her own sake.

hi pasha is almost 3 and we are trying to get her out and about and occupie her but she layes down and refuses to move, and we have cut back her food and giving low protien

i have already decided to have her spayed, yes she did do well at show and had the tests done

the aggression problems are all down to how she had been treated in her last home and not down to her temperment

Maybe, but it's impossible to tell for certain; it could be that her ill-treatment just made a poor temperament worse. Some dalmatians are dog-aggressive even with the very best of home lives.

Hi

I have found raspberry leaf tablets (Dorwest Herbs) work really well.  A breeder I purchased from gave me some about 6 years ago and I now use them every season, pregnant or not.
I have told other people about them that have had issued with phantoms and they seem to lessen or stop the symptoms.  They are also recommended for pregnant bitches as well.  Here is the link http://www.dorwest.com/prodinfo.asp?number=RL but they are available at most shows as there is always a Dorwest stand

hope it helps

Thanks Emma

Been using raspberry leaf capsuls for a few days now, and her milk has reduced a lot and the teats are going down too. Pasha is so much happier now, she is almost back to her normal mad self. she has even been nicer to other dogs lately aswell since taking the raspberry leaf capsuls.

Thanks again for your suggestion, im one very happy dog owner

So glad to hear that they work for you too.  :)

I think I would have a lot of unhappy bitches without them.
