Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Is it possible to be on a breeders waiting list for 3 years?

I'm asking this question for a friend of mine
She's basically looking into getting a puppy but is going to Uni in September, she'll be there for 3 years
She obviously doesn't want to get one untill she's done her course

At the moment her and her partner haven't contacted anyone yet to explain their situation so just thought I'd ask on here for her and show her any replies
Thanks :)

Personally I would think it best to wait till she has finished Uni.  Circumstances might change.

Of course it is OK. Depending on the breed she may well have to wait a while anyway. Obviously a more popular breed will be easier to get hold of but some of the minority breeds do have extremely long waiting lists.

There would be no problem in getting in touch with breeders and letting them know the circumstances. I've had people waiting a while, though not 3 years, and would be happy to have people show an interest. I only breed every few years so would be more than happy to have someone wait until I was ready to have a litter. Thugh I don't have a waiting list as such as just people who show an interest. After all, anything can happen in 3 years. On both sides.

It really does depend on the breed.  Someone on here waited almost 5 years for her first Spanish off me, though the waiting time is much less nowadays with new imports etc.

The reason she doesn't want to do that is that she could be waiting another possible few years for a pup
She has said that if circumstances changed she would contact whichever breeder she is on the waiting list for to tell them

I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say the breed she's after here
I don't much about the breeding side of it but I do know it's very very popular

I think you can say the breed, its only if you have a litter you cant.

not the longest of waits then really. i should think that a breeder would be happy having someone that patient on their list to be honest. they can always get in touch each time a litter is planned and check if they are ready for one.

just to say depending on if her course is reading based or class based and if shes working through it she might be a good choice for having a pup. if shes reading/writing essays at home and doesn;t have to work and only have a couple of hours classes a week it might really suit. it didn;t for me as i had to work as well so wasn't hoome enough.

How does she know what her work pattern is going to be until she finishes her studies or is the course vocational from an existing work position?  I would not want to put any one on a list unless they were in an established job and knew exactly what hours and when they would be working.

Why does she want to go on a waiting list now?

3 years is a long time to sit on a waiting list and she could spend some of it in looking around and really pay attention on where she wants the dog from.
She might see the perfect bitch with the perfect pedigree and decide she wants a puppy out of that bitch, that bitch might have not even been born yet :).
She might see a dog she wants a puppy from so will then need to find out who is planning to use that dog and whether she likes the bitch too.

If she already knows she wants a dog from certain breeder I see no harm in getting in touch and getting to know the breeder.
