Topic Dog Boards / Health / How can I firm up her stools?
- By contrarymary197 [ru] Date 27.07.08 18:13 UTC
My Tibetan Terrier puppy, Honey, is now 18 weeks old. At 9 weeks she developed compylobacter and spent the next 7 weeks on antibiotics until it finally cleared up. She now has the all clear, but her stools are still sloppy. The vet thinks she may have developed a dietary intolerance due to her bug at such a young age, or she may have had one anyway!! She was being fed on Burns small bites puppy complete (dried) but after discussion with my vet, I have changed her to Burns Pork and Potato dried complete. The frequency of her stools is now getting less, but not really the sloppiness, although she does still poo about 8-10 times a day. I need tissues to clear up! And she's still not clean overnight - when she started with her bug, I had to start leaving her crate door open as she was pooing so much and was being forced to lie in it, bless her! I don't want to start closing the door again until her stools are firmed up, as then I know she will have the control to last all night(she's doing between 2 and 5 at night). Does anyone have any suggestions? In all other ways she is fit and happy and healthy and is growing/putting weight on well. Thankyou

We had a dog that lost some sphincter control from a spinal injury and if she had a tummy bug with the 'runs' could not control it. Digestor (from petcetera) was recommended to me. We sprinkled it on the food and it almost seemed to create a 'cling film' like consistency. As if a bag was wrapped around he rpoo. Certainly easier to scoop up. May not be what you want but could be worth a try.

Have you tried a probiotic like Promax?
- By evelyn [gb] Date 27.07.08 20:24 UTC
I have had good results with Tree Barks Powder from Dorwest Herbs.

Thanks for those suggestions.  Another forum has suggested canned pumpkin (not the pie filling) Has anyone on here any experience of that?

... and if so, does anyone know where I can buy it from?  I live in Preston, Lancs - there are no Waitrose stores nearby!

If she can tolerate milk, try some Bio Yoghurt on her food, plain will do ;)  I found it firms up poos very nicely after a dog has had a tummy bug.  Also grated raw Courgette is good  ;)

If your pup does have a food allergy/intolerance make sure that there is nothing to affect her tum in the treats you give her ;)  it's surprising how many people forget this ;)

I don't know where you can buy pumpkin, other than Waitrose.   However, it's recommended because it is a good source of fiber so really almost any high fiber vegetable would be okay.  Sweet potatos are also high in fiber (higher than white potatos) and would make a good substitute.

You could also try adding some oat bran to her food; which has done really well for one of my dog's who tends to have anal gland "issues."

Tonight, for her tea, I've given her boiled rice mixed in with scrambled egg with some raw carrot sprinkled in. Does everyone think this could be OK? Since last night, she's also now on pro-kolin - her dose is 2ml of the paste twice a day.

Well, the boiled rice was a complete failure, as her runs were terrible that night! SO I moved onto plain old mashed potato then started adding in some boiled up white coley fish... Well the boiled mashed up potato and white coley fish seems to be working!! (touch wood) Her stools are still softish, but they are like proper dog poos - at last!! (although a little pale in colour). She only pooed twice overnight (both formed, and she usually does about 6) and once on our walk (formed again) She still has done about 8 in total throughout the day... but all have been the shape of poo! Gosh, I never thought I'd be cheering about formed dog poo, lol! Also, I was given a tip of Wafcol salmon and potato dog food. I researched it, and it really has no additives and seems a really pure food - so I've started gradually putting some of that in her food too since last night. Let's hope the good news continues!! They are the first formed poos she has done, though, in 11 weeks - since she was 9 weeks old - so it really is good news!

It may have been the scrambled egg that caused the runs that night. My boy gets the runs with scrambled but not hard boiled eggs - in fact he has 2 a week. Sometimes when they have iffy tums, its not the actual food but the way its cooked e. g. boiled chicken as opposed to roast or even breast compared to leg if you get what I mean.
My puppyboy had colitis from when I picked him up, with blood and mucus. I changed onto Naturediet and his poos firmed up straight away. Now I have him on naturediet, arden grange and natures menu all with good results. Even his treats are carefully chosen :-D

I have to be careful giving him new tastes as I never know if it will suit him or not . Its all trial and error.

It's nice to hear from you briedog - nice to hear from someone who's has gone through what my dog has been going through and come out the other side.  Yes, she was on the wrong a/b's to start with, until a fecal sample confirmed the compy diagnosis and she was put on the coreect a/b's.  At present, Honey still seems to be gaining weight well.

I would forget the eggs and carrots, and get back to the Vet if I were you.

Boiled or microwaved White fish only (sainsburys frozen blocks are good) with a tiny bit of Live (Rachels) plain yoghurt until you can see Vet.

Good Luck

Poor little thing your dogs system will be stressed due to the previous illness so possible senstive to change and possible showing sensitivites to ingredients, could be only temp could be long term.

Try a daily probiotic like Lacto B or protexin probiotic you can get these from your vet or you can purchase then online.
And Tree Barks powder from dorwest herbs (mix in with food) or just Slippery Elm tablets. Tree Barks/slippery Elm helps soothe and slow the passage of food through the gut.
Echinacea will boost the immune system or Animal Magic Royal Jelly & Echinacea capsules.
There are homoeopathic remedies that will help, your vet can refer you to a homoeopathic vet.

The food your dog's is on maybe not suited to it as pork can be rather a strong food. Try boiled fish (make sure no bones in) if you prefer a already made diet then you could switch to a light fish food. Naturediet wet fish and rice is a good one, it's made for sensitive digestion and it is very light on the stomach :)

Thought I'd update everyone.  We've been in holiday to Scotland for a week, and Honey came with us.  Her poo has got better and better and, although not as firm as my other dog's Willow, her poo is now perfectly formed.  The Salmon and potato Wafcol seems to have done the trick... or maybe her system is just completely over the compy bug now.  Time will tell but I'm now enjoying the fact she has normal poo!!  Thankyou for everyone's advice xx
