My bitch has really enlarged teats, she finished her first season about 3 weeks ago - and we noticed the enlargement about a week ago - my first thought was that she was having a phantom pregnancy (as she has been no where near un-neutered males), so we took her to the vet, whom said that this is just normal - its just her 'growing up', but they seem to be getting even bigger - is this normal, or has the vet got it wrong?

Do you mean nipples?  If so, yes it's normal :-)

One way to be absolutely certain is to have her scanned. It isn't expensive, my vet charges £25.

Sorry what I actual meant was the area around the nipples - like they are full with milk?
they are hanging down now a little like cows udders :)

Could just be hormones. If she finished her season 3 weeks ago, she would only be about 4 weeks in whelp now if she had been accidentally mated. That's a bit soon for her to be bagging up.

But the OP has said that she has been no where near un neutered males so why would she need the pup scanned???

Because I've known people who's bitches have had pups to swear that they haven't been anywhere near another dog, then you find out things like...the neighbours have a dog, but theres a 3 foot fence in between the gardens. Or, on one memorable occasion, having given my mother-in-laws friend the news that I was sure her bitch was in whelp because I could actually feel the pups moving she said 'that's impossible, the only dog she has been anywhere near is her father, and he wouldn't have mated with her would he'. Also, recently neutered males are still capably of fathering puppies.

I once had a cocker spaniel who had a phantom pregnancy after her first season.  Her teats actually started leaking milk she had so much!  Other dogs would come running up to her in the park to try and lick, lol!!  The vet didn't give her any treatment, only time - and it went away.  She also got a little depressed.  It never happened again after this first season.
