Can anyone explain the test results to me please ie upto what number is affected, carrier or unaffected
thankyou
Hi Bek.
My first post so here goes !!!
vWD protocol goes. Clear Female to Clear Male = 100% clear. Clear Female to Carrier Male = 50/50 clear/carrier. Clear Female to Affected Male = 100% carrier.
Carrier Female to Clear Male = 50/50 clear/carrier. Carrier Female to Carrier Male = 25/50/25 clear/carrier/affected. Carrier Female to Affected Male = 50/50 carrier/affected.
Affected Female to Clear Male = 100% carrier. Affected Female to Carrier Male 50/50 carrier/affected. Affected Female to Affected Male = 100% affected.
Hope this helps.

By number do you mean by blood test or DNA test?
A DNA test will give you a clear/carrier/affected result. A blood test will give a blood cell count and doesn't mean the paper it's written on really although can give a rough idea.

thanks for the replys.
my friend has had her dog vwd tested the vet took the blood sample which was then sent to america it came back as a score of 52 the vet said 0- 50 is affected and 69 upwards is unaffected but is unsure and says maybe retest in a year, i have since found out the test should have been sent to someone called jeff sampson, does this mean the test she has had done dosn't count

Sounds like a blood test count then in which case re-testing could give another figure then what do you believe?
A dog in our breed pre DNA test had a count that everyone thought would mean he is clear, he was however a carrier. A top stud dog in his time (untill his son took over!) was used quite abit, everyone believeing he was clear....Now we have DNA testing we know better :) (however his still given a lovely gene pool to the breed with some wonderful pedigrees and sired one of the best litters to make it in the ring.)

thankyou ice queen
so what is the difference between the blood test and the dna test do they both test for the same thing and are they both affective.
sorry for all the questions just trying to get my head round it as it is not my breed
Hi Bex,
I had my tests sent from America if you do a search for vetgen on google it should come up.
A lady who had a puppy from me had a blood test done from her vet but the results were not that easy to read , so she
sent a test to vetgen and we got a a clear result back, they can email the result which you can then print.
Hope this helps

I had ours done at Laboklin UK. I downloaded the form and the vet sent it off. Came back in about a week with e mail result and hard copy. It cost £65
Dobermanns are my breed and we regularly test for vWD. The Kennel Club run thier own scheme for this test. If you contact them they send out a swab testing kit, which requires you to take a simple swab from inside the dogs cheek. This in turn is sent off the to KC ( they do monthly batches ). They then send off to a firm in Finland called Finnzymes Diagnostics. Approx cost is £90 ( don't quote me on that, as my last one was done over a year ago ). It test usually comes back within 2 weeks. It clearly states if the dog is clear/carrier or affected. For most of us the swab test has overtaken the blood test. If your dog is KC registered then their result will appear in the KC quarterly breed supplement.

Fantastic vanhallen will pass on this info thankyou

But is this for only those breeds with a DNA test esablished Valhallen?
I know we had to wait for ours for the red and whites....
What illnessess does vWD cause, what does it do to the dog?

I gather it causes haemorrhage which can be very difficult to control.
Icequeen, I'm not sure about other breeds. I know originally like all swab tests they start off as blood tests, with my breed because it is now a long established test then the DNA marker is obviously in place. It might be an idea to approach the relative Breed Council for advice, or one of the Breed Clubs. It usually takes a long time to get the test down to a swab. There has to be lots of trials with dogs so that they can go on to identify the DNA/rogue gene that causes the disease.
vWD is a blood clotting disorder.
P.S. I was the original reply to the OP, but because I'm new had to change my username, so Icequeen I'm not ignoring you promise !!!!!
I have been reading some info that vWD is present in DDB a few inet searches come up with it and fido facts in dogs today magazine. Mentioned nothing about hip displaysia just vWD and heart problems.
Never heard of it and dont know any other breeders that have.

Does the DDB club have a health committee? I would ask them as they should have the most up to date information if they have anything about them.
