Topic Dog Boards / Health / Puppy throwing up after eating washing soda crystals

My 4 months old samoyed recently swallowed a sock, so we took him to the vet who gave him pieces of washing soda crystals. He threw the sock up pretty soon and all seemed well. But the thing is, it's been 4 days since he was given the soda crystals and he's still throwing up a bit.

I was told by the vet that he would be fine after his initial vomiting so when we came home from the vet, we gave him 2/3 of his usual dinner amount. The next morning, he had the whole dinner thrown up out on the floor. So we fasted him for a day and gave hima small amount of plain cooked rice later that day, which he also threw up after 2 or 3 hours. He doesn't look ill and he still wants to eat, play and has been going to poop as usual. He had plain rice again yesterday in small amounts, which he was able to hold down. But when we woke up this morning, he had thrown up a small amount of liquid (but not the rice he ate or any other solids). He's still running around and barking loud as he usually does. His vomiting is decreasing each day which I guess is a good sign but I'm still worried.

The vet's not open yet but I'm planning to take him when it does. Could it be that he's still not feeling too well from the soda crystals? Has anyone seen dogs suffering from lasting affects after he/she was given soda crystals? Maybe the vet gave him too much? He is still only a puppy afterall.

That could always be a possibility, but we watch out for him quite closely and keep all our rooms closed

hopefully someone will be along with alot more experience than me.
I have never heard of using washing soda crystals but you are in a different country to most of us, and am sure someone else will say they have, I hope, as I couldnt guess as to if the crystals have had and adverse reaction :) as he is still alert that is a good sign but just keep a cose eye on him and if his condition doesnt improve or get worse tke him back to the vet asap. Also if you are worried at all ring the vet and ask for advice.
Lea :)

Thanks :)
It seemed a bit odd when the vet took out a box with "Washing Soda" printed on it, but apparently, that's what they use. Lol. I looked it up on the net, and I've found a couple of sites which suggests using washing crystals to induce vomiting when dogs ingest poison or other no-no's.

ive seen washing soda crystals being used in vets, never heard of any adverse reactions though?

I have used soda crystals to induce vomiting, with a cloth swallowing Flat-coat- once the object is up, there is usually no ill effect. Like Lea, I would be looking for the other sock.

Dorain had washing soda crystals when he ate the large bar of dark chocolate that was not well hidden in little brother's room... after the upchuck of molten chocolate he was fine. :) I haven't heard of it causing problems.

Ditto everyone else - has he eaten anything else, or got a bug or something? What did the vet say?

At one time we all kept a pack of lump soda in the dog first aid kit, only reason we don't now is that we can no longer get it, only soda crystals. Never known it cause a problem, it may just be that swallowing a sock and bringing it up again has caused an irritation to the throat and stomach and it will pass in time.

Try giving him a pot of live yoghourt. It's very good for upset tummies.

I have also used s/crystals. it is amazing how quickly it maks the canine vomit. I always keep some handy, just in case.

How much do you give to make them vomit?
- By tadog [gb] Date 21.07.08 08:44 UTC
for retriever  I give size of small walnut. For working cocker half teaspoon.

my partner was looking after our Boston pup, a few months ago he took her to his dads, when his dad asked for a couple of nurophen tablets and being a bit clumsey he managed to drop a tablet to which the Boston chased and my partner thought she swallowed as it couldnt be found,so he rung the vets in panic who told him to make a solution of diluted washing crystals up and put them in a syringe,as the tablets were the strongest nurophens the vets had to contact the animal poisons dept. at the animal health trust for further treatment, my partner also had never heard of giving soda to dogs as we have also had boxers for twenty years and they have also eaten various things that shouldnt go near a dogs mouth, anyway Tim actually drank some of the diluted mixture as he didnt think it was right to give a 15 week old pup, then he gave her some she wouldnt vomit so he took her straight to the 24hr vets she was taken in for the same treatment he was told to wait, she then came back out all bedraggled soaking wet she had vomited quite a few times in the surgery but no tablet to be found, he was told to rest her so she was caged for the night. He went back to his dad to check on him and what was there under the kitchen table, the lost tablet so Mabel went through all that for nothing in the end but it could have turnned out much worse.so to answer your question we are in west sussex so our vets use the washing crystal treatment as well
