might seem a silly question but if i make scrambled egg (egg with milk in microwave) would this be classed as a milk meal for a puppy or not? like i said may be  silly question but just wondered? thanks in advance

I have no idea, but thought I'd bump this to the top of the board in case it gets missed. Hope someone comes along who can help soon

I'd have said no, that the milk in scrambled egg is minimal so it doesn't count as a milk meal.

hi thanks  Dakkobear for bumping me up. and thanks to jeangenie just wondered wether it would count or not but i suppose there wouldnt be much milk in it. what in your opinion would be good to give as a milk meal? thanks

Personally I never give puppies milk -they get the milk they need from their mum for as long as they need milk, and I've had nothing but disastrous results (very upset tummies) when trying other milk. They don't need any other milk but mum's milk, and when she stops feeding them, they no longer need milk.

For scrambled eggs I use goat's milk, not cow's milk.

Milk, basically. Maybe thickened with weetabix or something similar so that it sticks to their tongues as they're learning to lap. After about 5 weeks they really don't need it as long as they have free access to fresh water (any milk they need they'll still be getting from their mum) but it makes us feel better!

hi you will have to excuse my post basically i have bought two puppies and the breeder has told me to give them a milk meal but i always though that milk gave them upset stomach (long time since i last reared a puppy) at the moment following a sugestion on this forum i am feeding them 3 times daily with dry puppy food tripe for morning meal, afternoon puppy food and scrambled egg and evening meal same as morning so wasnt sure how to give them there milk meal they are comming up 11 weeks now, so do they no longer need a milk meal? thanks

I would cut out the scrambled egg meal, they don't need it, and feed the puppy food/tripe 3 times a day.

Puppies usually stay on 4 meals a day till they're 12 weeks old, so ideally you'd need to fit in another meal of puppy food to make sure they get all the nourishment they need to grow properly. I won't say my thoughts about a breeder who'd sell two puppies to the same home (no slight to you, but it's generally Bad Practice) but they really don't need a milk meal at that age, although they usually like it! It also makes sure they have a good drink, which is vital.

I've only ever known one dog to have problems digesting milk so I'm not personally convinced about the lactose-intolerant theory, but it seems to be a very widespread belief, and not giving them milk won't damage them so it doesn't really matter!

Could be breed specific I guess -certainly I will never, ever do it again as it ended up with vets visits and all sorts, the poor pups were really ill from it. That was two different litters.

Interesting - I've always given my pups milk, both replacement milks, cows' milk, goats' milk and also made up lambs' milk from powder - never an upset tum :)

Our Bernese used to get the cheap blue stripe creamed rice pudding from tesco ( about 20p a tin) for her supper when she was a baby (her breeder gave it to the litter)- she loved it, but she started to get a bit of an upset tum when she got to around 6-7 months so we stopped it then. I didn't think she would ever forgive us as she adored it so much :-D . Our setter is a bit dairy intolerant so she didn't get any milk products at all as a baby and still doesn't - except when she nicks the butter tub from the worktop :-\

It was my  mother's Golden who used to get a bit squitty if he had milk - was it your goldens with the problem?
- By weim1 [gb] Date 20.07.08 15:26 UTC
When we got rosie our weimaraner the breeder told us to give her tinned rice pudding as one of her meals, at the time I thought it odd but she loved it and thrived on it. Donna

Puppies produce a substance in their stomachs called rennin, (this is what gives a puppies breath that distinctive smell), without this rennin they wouldn't be able to digest the dairy fats in their mothers milk. When their breath no longer has this distinctive smell they are no longer producing rennin and milk will give them an upset tummy. They can still have cheese however, as rennin is added to cheese as part of the manufacturing process. I know this is fairly useless information, but it doesn't half impress your puppy buyers.
