Hi, I am abit concerned about a dog and wandered if you lovely people could give me some advice.
While out walking my dogs a lad come running out of his house and called me, he said he had an Akita pup 6 months old that he didnt want anymore, and asked if i or anybody i knew would want her, for free, i told him i didnt know much about Akitas and i already have 4 dogs, but told him i would take mine home and come and have a look at her.
When i went back to see her he was asking other people if they wanted her, but they said no, he had her with him and was quite happy to give her to anybody that would take her.
She is a big girl for 6 months but to me (and i dont know much about Akitas) she did not look like a full Akita, her tail was low set and held down, her coat was very short and dense, and she had one ear up and one ear down, not teddy bear looking like i would of thought, she had the Akita colouring and a really big head and jaws, to be honest she looked like she could have a bit of bull terrier in her.
He said he was 100% sure she was full Akita (obviously no papers) and said he didnt want her because she is to boisterous, mouths him and his kids all the time and chews everything (isnt that what most puppies do) but to me she seemed sweet and loving with a very waggy tail.
I suggested being abit firmer with her and take her to some puppy classes and socialise her more, but he said he couldnt be bothered with her and doesnt have the time (so why get a pup in the first place, sorry just makes me really mad) I told him to contact the animal werfare officer, and local rescue kennels ext, but he said he just wanted her gone A.S.A.P and again couldnt be bothered.
Anyway, i asked him to keep hold of her tonight and i will have a word with some friends and get back to him tomorrow, he said he would, but i am not sure if he will, he seemed very desperate to "get rid" of her (poor girl).
Well i just wanted some advice on what i could do to help this young girl, i cant stop thinking about her and i am worried if she gets in the wrong hands, i have heard Akitas can be very aggresive in the wrong hands, and then theres the breeding, or worse him just dumpimg her.

Thanks in advance for any replys.

Giving her away for free will cause her nothing but heartache - especially because of her breed. Who knows who might get their hands on her :-(
If you've got time maybe you could speak to a few rescues and see if you can find one willing to take her. If you do, then you could tell him he can be rid of his dog ASAP, like he wanted. I know this does rather put the pressure on you which is unfair but I can't imagine the dogs owner is particularly keen to do what is right. Poor girl. I hope this turns out well for her. What is wrong with some people? Grrrrrrrrr.

Probably too late, but could you go and get the dog, telling him you will take her to Akita rescue.
It would be better having her with you for a day and fiding a rescue place for her then him handing her over to any tom dick or harry
:(
If you cant then I apologise for suggesting it.
Lea :)

If he can't be bothered to call rescue, I would do it, explain the situtation and let them turn up at the door to collect, he is giving her away for free, so what does it matter if rescue turn up instead.

No-one should take a dog on that they know nothing about, rescue can assess her and find the correct home for her, otherwise she may just end up being passed on and on and on.

Make that call, to give her the chance of a good forever home. :-)

what sort of person is he to wander in the street trying to give a dog away .the poor dog ...but saying that probably the best thing for her if she is unwanted , I presume you went down the breeder route? if it is possible I would take her too and get her into a rescue.

Thank you for being so caring towards a dog you know nothing about.

hope you find a solution for her sake.

Thank you for all your replys, Akita rescue, why didnt i think of that, but will they still take her if she is a cross? I have just been round to see him and he does still have the dog, but still very desperate to "ged rid" of her (his words not mine) i know i have to work fast now, i am going to call the Akita rescue and the Dogs Trust now to see if they can help her, fingers crossed, i will let you all know what happens.

Just a thought, and apologies if I'm being overly suspicious.  Could she have been stolen?

If that were the case I know that it would be unusual to give the dog away but this person may have bought the dog 'secondhand' as it were without realising how much work is involved.

May just be worth doing a quick check round the local vets or even online to see if anyone has reported a similar dog missing.

Good luck and thank goodness he offered her to someone sensible like you.
