Please send positive thought my girl's way. Tammy is almost 12 and is going in today to be speyed.

She developed a brown discharge yesterday and the vet said that I could try antibiotics but that it would return in the future or go straight for the op. I know that a bitch can become very ill quite quickly with Pyo so said to go ahead with the operation.

She had her spleen removed 6 years ago for hemangiosarcoma and I hate the idea of them opening her up again and feel that her age is agianst her also.

I know that I made the right call but I am terrified of losing her as a result of her surgery.

(virtual hug)

Its the only decision you could have made.

She will be fine, horrid day for you though. If it is any consolation I had a bitch, a few weeks off her 12th birthday and she coped with 4 operations in 5 days, recovered and made it through to nearly 15.  (((((((((hug ))))))))

I was the same 2 years ago when my old 9 year old Rottie cross went in.
I was in work driving a mini digger, and how on earth I didnt hit something or somebody with it as my mind was deffnatly NOT on work.
I kept thinking she wasnt going to make it.
BUT she did :) and came out of surgery as if nothing had happened!!!! LOL
So I know you will but please try not to worry, as I nearly made myself ill with worry those 2 days.
All positive thoughts coming yours and Tammys way,
It was the only decision you could have made.

Thank you all so much. She is home now but it was a dreadful day. The vet phoned me before the start of the op to say that they had detected a grade 3 heart murmur and did I want them to go ahead. The choice was still the same so I had to risk losing her on the table because if I didn't, the pyo would take her. The vet said that if anything went wrong that she would phone me at work. Everytime the phone rang I thought I was going to have a stroke!!!

She is very very sleepy and wobbly but at least she is home. I am hoping and praying for a full recovery then I will have her heart assessed properly.

Thanks again xx

Glad she is back home with you, and hope she makes a full and quick recovery.

Hope Tammy makes a good recovery.  Just to give you hope, we have recently been through this with a 12 year old Saint, who also has laryngeal paralysis.  She made a wonderful recovery and is doing really well for such an old lady.

Thats great news :) I have been thinking about you thios evening.
After Gemmas op she was very sleepy and bad on her legs until the next day, so dont worry about it just yet!!!!
As for the heart murmur, dont panic until you find out more :)

Glad she is on the mend, if you see something or even just feel worried then phone the vet and ask, it will put your mind at rest and what your girl needs most is some TLC from a relaxed carer.

Hi, I am going to phone the vet as she keeps trying to scratch her tum and there is a little more blood on her back leg. I am  also worryimg about her breathing as she is panting much more than the others although she is very bright.
- By Lea Date 17.07.08 07:09 UTC
Good luck with the vet, I hope it is nothing to worry about.
Let us know when you have spoken to them

The nurse says that since she is bright just to come in at 4 when I was due in anyway. I will just sit with Tammy and watch her till then. Thank you all again.

- By AlisonGold [gb] Date 17.07.08 13:51 UTC
Don't forget, she will be feeling some discomfort and therefore will pant. Very worrying isn't it. I am sure she will be fine, they are far more resiliant than we moaning humans are. Hope she is okay.

Hi The vet says that it is serous fluid leaking from her wound and to put a dressing on it and not to worry.

Her chest was sounded and the vet was concerned about her colour so she has been started on heart medication.

Thank you again.

Has she been doing too much???
When Gemma was spayed, I was moving house, so Gemma was constatly wlking around as she didnt know what was going on. It meant the wound leaked alot. It was only when I had completely moved into the new house she got the rest she needed and the wound healed fine.
Ebba was the same, she just would not lay down. Still jumpig the walls in the garden so I had to take her outside on the lead, but she still jumped up on sofa bed etc!!! She also has excess swelling from doing too much.
Both recovered fine.

Hi Lea,

I have kept her crated to keep her safe from the rough and tumble of being among the other dogs but wonder if her trying to scratch has caused the trouble. Maybe the movement of her back legs has irritated the wound.

I couldn't get a pad to stick to her tum but have put a tshirt on her and she seems a bit more comfortable today. I hope her skin is calming down a bit now.

Thank you.

Deirdre xx
