my friends 8 year old dog has just started to eat other dogs poos while were in the field. Does any body have any ideas why?

I was told that there is undigested food in it and the feces can atract the dog.

Hiya
my dog will eat horse poo -given half a chance even though it makes him sick! There is something about it that they find irresistable ,I know friends dogs who have rolled in fox poo - I believe thats worse !as for the eating of poo I have heard of it but sorry can't help :)

Hi Selsey
Most dogs that eat poo are perfectly normal - it's only disgusting to us!! However, there are some diseases which can result in a dog eating poo that otherwise wouldn't bother, mainly ones that make the dog hungrier like EPI, diabetes and a few others which cause a loss of protein in the kidneys.
As this dog has just started at eight years old then a trip to the vets for a check up may put your friends mind at rest. :)

Hi
A good tip to stop your dog eating it's own faeces is to put a chunk of pineapple in it's food. There is something in the pineapple that is revolting to dogs and usually cures the problem.

Hello Puppy walker
Somebody is going to have to tell both my dogs that they dont like pineapple. They both love it. So did my last two dogs.

Dogs like pineapple :-) It works on the enzymes and should when it has passed through them make their faeces less attractive :-( It does take a while for this to happen though :D

Mine both eat it, so I have to clean it up as soon as I spot it, as their breath is disgusting wen they come in on cold nights smiling and having that waft through the house. My vet says one of his eats it, the other doesn't, and that it's nothing to worry about. But the smell!

Thanks for the tip, I have just tried pinapple in my dogs food today, here's hoping. Mine is doing it when left, whilst I am at work (she is only left 2hrs, before the dogsitter arrives) so I don't get chance to clean it up:( so its fingers crossed for tomorrow. Also, dosed her up with rescue remedy.

Gogs eat their own faeces usually because of the undigested food excreted. This is due to processed food. To a dog the ploppies are just as appetrising and smell just as good as what goes in the other end ! revolting I know. Trynfeeding raw meat and veg and the prob will disappear. Also, not so much poo to clear up as waste is minimal...and it's generally hard and crumbly instead of sloppy and brown ....... yuk !!!
