Poor little soul...
Jack has a huge swollen paw, and is limping so badly.
I have him on metacam and I'm bathing the paw in hot saline water in the hope that it comes to a head and sends forth the offending particle.
The vet is reluctant to go down the AB route and said she would have to 'put him out' with an anaesthetic. If it doesn't clear. He is hopeless in the vets and if a needle is involved I have to muzzle him.
Is there eanything else I can do to speed up the process?
I know I have some type of 'drawing' paste in my bathroom cabinet could I use this?

Hi Karen
Keep a close eye on him years ago one of ours got a blackthorn in his paw and .we didn,t know as it bedded right in between his toes  he was quite poorly running a temperature and shivering the vet did give him anti biotics and advised us to hold his paw in salty  water as warm as he could bear .
We did this three or four times a day and if I remember rightly we were given some drawing ointment to use in between the bathing so I would try that as well.
Good luck hope he,s soon better.

Thanks for that Sharon.
Have been holding his paw in the hot salty water, about which he is being really good.
Now I will feel more confident about the paste and will go straight to it.

Personally I have used honey as a poultice - because it is high in sugar it draws much and offending objects to the surface. I smear honey over the swelling or puncture and bandage, then change daily. Have rarely had to use i9t myself, but a freidn used it on her springer and got a thorn out of her paw within a couple of days (tho it might have worked its way out anyway ;-) ).

Nooooo, hunt the seed under anaesthetic tomorrow a.m.!
He is going to be castrated at the same time so no more stress at shows either.

I think this may be Jakes problem he is going out about now!! I thought at first he may have broken a toe, but its like an elephant foot at the moment, but can you see a grass seed in the foot? we could not see a cut or anything?
I'll definately try honey, by a drawing paste do you mean magnesium sulphate? can you use that on dogs?
(not that i am trying it on Jake, but I use it on HOOmans)

I did mean magnesium sulph.
He is back from surgery and they dug hard and found no grass seed!!  :(
He has to wear the buster collar for 12 days.....
He had his 'bits' removed whilst under so he is going to be sorry for himself for a while yet.
Do hope Jake is going to be okay.
Thanks Lori for wishes...

glad I am not the only one been caught for this.  Pup got a barley seed stuck in her ear and had to be sedated to get it out because it was really far down.  My eldest then got something in his paw last week, the paw swelled right up, became pussy and was bleeding.  Luckily it seems Kai got it out himself but off to vets to be on the safe side.  Now on prednislone (sp?) and antibiotics and everything nearly all healed up again.
