Topic Dog Boards / Health / Flea prevention - Garlic tablets. Any good?
- By BestBichon [gb] Date 03.06.08 10:32 UTC
Just wondering if anyone has personal experience of using garlic tablets to ward off fleas
- By BestBichon [gb] Date 06.06.08 08:48 UTC
Anyone?

Mine get them. Garlic capsules that is, not fleas :)
- By perrodeagua [gb] Date 06.06.08 09:19 UTC
Since I've been using them my dogs have never had fleas!  Better than any chemical spray in my opinion.  You have to be careful with the dosage.  I do only give one a week to my guys.

What dosage are you using. I'm taking 125mg per day myself to try and keep midges off - they love my blood for some reason. Wonder if these tablets would do.

I give my dogs 1/2 clove fresh garlic a day, they have never had fleas.

Oh, Ive been giving my pup one a day for the past month :-( what is the corret dosge for a 11kg dog then?
- By Teri Date 10.06.08 10:08 UTC
My dogs get regular fresh garlic in their diet rather than in pill/capsule form and occasionally get whole cloves of garlic as treats :)  Never had a flea or tick problem in around 20 years despite their being a large population of foxes, hedgehogs, rabbits, red deer, squirrels etc all around us together with a thriving ferral cat community too!

regards, Teri :)

Thanks Teri, guess its a garlic breath dog from now on then :-)

Hi

Do you think its ok to give garlic to a 7 month old cavalier kings charles spaniel

He is fleed with stronghold but this just is a lotion that goes on to his neck i dont see how it can spread and work unless it seeps through to his blood.

How much garlic is good for him?

Thanks

> i dont see how it can spread and work

I know, it seems like a little mini miracle :-)  but it does work.  It does not go into the blood stream but dissolves in the sebum, the fat layer under the skin.

Mine have garlic in their diet now but my 4 mals have had 1 garlic tab since pups and we have never had any fleas.

I make some doggie biscuits with brown flour, oil, cheese, garlic bake until they are hard and both dogs lap them up, never any fleas either.
So I agree its a minor miracle and natural.

Garlic does work at preventing fleas as does Brewers Yeast (b vitamins).  Much better than the strong chemicals which can actually burn the skin or cause other problems.

Don't forget, lots of garlic is poisonous to dogs.

I was advised by an old well known dog person to use garlic granules you can get these quite reasonably priced at the  old fashioned health shops I got a kilo for £3.98 our dogs get a half  teaspoon a couple of times a week and they have not been scratching since we put them on it,mind you they do have garlic breath :)

Hi gumi

If it helps I have a cavalier (quite a small one) and she is prone to getting fleas. I give her half a normal sized clove of fresh garlic a day and it has worked a treat. If the cloves are thin and small then i give her a whole one. She used to hate eating it but now she loves it and sits by the fridge waiting for it in the morning. I found that the frontline we put on her neck didn't work.

Hope that helps :-)

Yes garlic definitley works, and you could always stick it inside something tasty like cheese if it helps it go down.

Hi, what sort of dosage would you give to 25kg dogs?
- By tohme Date 14.07.08 10:34 UTC
If you buy garlic tablets/granules/powder specifically formulated by licensed retailers they will give you the dosage advice.

Yes, it has been found that people and pets that have adequate b vitamins don't get bitten as much!
