Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / Dog scared of baby?

As I've mentioned before I have a 4 yr old staff/patterdale x lab Tinkerbell. The advise I need is on the girl I got this dog from Tinkerbell has a brother called fatman- I have tried to help this dog[owner] before with his problems of separation anxiety and nervousness before and have had a go at my friend for not exercising him enough. She has asked me to visit her house with my tinker to help fatman get over his terror of my friends grandson who lives in the house,  he is about 8 months old, the dog is runnings away from the baby and now starts weeing himself when baby comes near him? I am going up there in a minute but would like to ask advise on how to get this dog ok with this baby? I will return later and tell you how this went. Any tips would be appreciated. Sue

I am no expert but the dog sounds very anxious. First he needs his own safe space to escape to, and second I would suggest a DAP plug in diffuser. But to be honest I think your friend might be better getting in a good behaviourist to assess the situation and help, as it does sound like the dog really has quite a big problem with the baby and it isn't something you want to escalate.

hi
thanks for your reply I went up to see how fatman was behaving with this young babe- the baby is 11 months old. The dog is very fearful but as I took my dog up to see how baby was with dogs and she is not scared at all, I noticed the baby gets his finger and puts it near the dogs eye's and up their nostrils . I told the baby not to do that and mine just licked him to death but as fatman is a large dog and very puppy- like can and does not meaning to knock him while walking past-then the dog is shouted at by my friend nanny! So the poor dog is worried about being told off all the time so its the nanny's fault why fatman is the way he is.

I took some treats up with me and sat on the floor with the baby on my lap and fatman sat in front of me and took a sweet and sniffed the babies hand- the nan said that is the closest he has ever gotten to the baby but I do doubt that- as the baby is very mobile and learning to walk using the sofa.

The poor dog's main issue is lacking in confidence and is generally a worrier. He is a very sweet natured dog and has zero aggression. I can see that the baby needs to learn to touch the dog properly not grab hold of his fur or poke with his finger. I did try and get the baby to give him the treat but he just looked at me and didn't understand bless hopefully as the child gets older he will interact with him better.
