My dog peg has got kennel cough and after being up most of last night and then straight to the vets this morning I wondered if there was anything else I can do,Peg is 9 and takes steroids for rheumatoid arthrits,so her immunity is compromised a little anyway but this seems to have hit her hard,we went to a dog show(fun) a few weeks back with our friends and thier 2 saluks went down with it on Saturday.I have another dog aswell so I think it would be a miracle if he doesn't get it aswell, the vet asked if I could keep them apart but I told him it would be impossible as we live in a cottage.
Peg would eat anything going but tonight even had to think twice about a sausage, vet told me to rest her of course ,but I said I have at least to walk her round the block as otherwise her joints would suffer.Vet also said that this disease can be carried for 3 months. She is distressed at having coughing fits and actually started to cry a bit earlier on,Im doing all I can to comfort her,but if there is anything else I should know ,please let me know,I would be very grateful.

I use Drosera if any of mine cough it is a homeopathic remedy.  It used to be used in children with hooping cough.

I used Benylin for chesty/productive coughs (childrens dose) for mine when they got it.  I also put Tea tree oil and vick on their collars to ease things and made them chicken soup with garlic and soaked their normal ration in it as they weren't up to eating kibble.  I didn't walk them as they really didn't want to bother and were happy to potter in the garden.

Basically I treated them the same as I did my children when they had a heavy cold/infection ;)   I did have the luxury of a stethoscope tho, so I could make sure their chests were clear ;)

Hope this helps and hope they get better soon - it's a rotten time for you and the dogs.

One of our dogs was a rescue - he was the only dog in the home not barking but when we got home we realised it's because he had a sore throat!  Apparently there's a reason they call it kennel cough and we were warned but it is still distressing to watch them and it made our dog vomit a little too.

i recall the vet gave an injection, I can't remember exactly what it was as it was 4 yrs ago, but the vet also recommended Benylin - the standard red one.  Our dog liked it so much he'd just drink it out of the measuring cup.  KC can take a while to clear up but we were quite lucky and the worst of the symptoms reduced almost daily.  We were advised to give controlled walks with no over exertion and with the help of his cough medicine he was completely clear within 2 or 3 weeks.  We also gave soft food for a week as I thought it might be more soothing on his throat.

Hope your dog gets well soon

Thank you so much for that advice,I didn't think of cough mixture,or that crunchy food is going to be a bit sore(i dont have any kids so i haven't been through this)I will check cough mixture doesn't interact with steroids, although the steroids will reduce inflammation.
I did not realise that this disease varies symptoms until I read up on it,(no point relying on vets to tell you the whole story)
Good thing is that tonight she ate all her dinner, extra large, and seemed more picked up,enough to wipe her face on my jeans,so thats normal.
Thanks again for your advice,
Ash.

Keep going a bit of steam in the room like the old vapour lamps may help, cant exactlly karvol them can you. Have a long bath and have her in the bathroom, should ease it a bit I'll remember Benilyn as well.
