Topic Dog Boards / Health / 7 month old puppy has Bad breath all of a sudden!!! Help
- By gumi [gb] Date 09.07.08 10:06 UTC
Hiya

My cavalier kings charles spaniel has bad breath and a smelly mouth from the outside. Smells bad

We have checked his teeth all seem ok.

Is there any other reason why this happened? Any cures please?

Thanks

Try cleaning its teeth with a doggy mint tooth paste. Usally the reason for bad breath is a tummy upset!

Hiya

Yes we have started brushing his teeth even though he hates it

Do you think his diet has anything to do with it?

He eats Natures diet and HILLS Id kibble

I know they can suffer from anal gland problems although I don't know if they start that young - does he seem to be licking his bottom or dragging it on the ground at all?

Have you checked the folds on the side of his lips??  Spaniels can often get infection here.  If this is where the smell is coming from (smells like something died  ) try bathing it with salt water twice a day and putting on tea-tree ointment which will soothe and heal it and help keep it clean.  If this doesn't clear it up in a few days then the vet will give you something stronger.

If it isn't that maybe he's got something caught in his teeth/mouth which is causing the smell?

Well i have checked it all looks normal the thing is he has been licking his anul and private parts so much recently and biting his legs and constantly licking his legs too so i dont know what is going on,he was at vets on monday they said keep an eye on his licking but it can be due to boredom...

Is there anything i can give him from home 1st like natural stuff? I will try bathing his mouth with vinegar as Im told this may work.....

Its just getting worse

then i guess its off to pet shop and vets if nothing helps...

Sounds a lot like anal gland problems to me - I would get the vet to check.  Is the smell a horrible fishy one?

If a dog swallows something that can't pass through the stomach it can cause bad breath, it will usually be vomited up but keep an eye on him in case of further symptoms.

He vomitted white bile this morning so what ever he may have eaten has come out as he pooped twice after...

The smell is like something out of the washing machine that has not been dried properly or we have not used comfort, its sort of fishy but rotten aswell

its a strange smell real off putting and liek something rotting away.....

poor thing...

he vomitted this morning but the smell is still there worser than yesterday infact

Think a trip to the vet is in order, if the smell is from the mouth then I would guess he has eaten something like a sock if it is from the rear end then it may be anal glands, if it is general smell who knows but I think you should ask your vet. The fact that he has pooed this morning does not mean there is nothing in the stomach. Something that cannot pass into the intestines may remain in the stomach for several days with out being vomited but it will cause bad breath.

Hopefully not to worry you but ask the vet about kidney problems, symptoms in my bitch started with bad breath and occasional vomiting. This is probabily a false alarm but better to check early.

Puppyboy Louis developed a 'smell' at about 6 months. After a process of much deliberation and elimination  :-D we discovered it was coming from his mouth flaps. We just wipe them out daily along with his facial folds ( and bottom too as he cant reach :) ) We call him fish face :-D when he is 'high' LOL

Hiya

we wipe his flaps and face and everywhere he can not reach...

the thing is other dogs at his training dont have this smell so it must be something inside him then?

Have you had the vet empty his anal glands as was suggested last week?
