Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / peeing on walks

I have a wonderful 12 wk old Boxer and he has almost grasped the toilet training bit and mostly goes outside in the garden with the odd mishap indoors!
However, he simply will not go when we are out on a walk.
He loves walks and  is very good on and off the lead. He doesn't stray far from me and I wondered if he's worried that if he stops for a widdle he'll get left behind so I've tried stopping a few times to give him some time but then he sits on his bum and looks at me as if to say "c'mon mum, get going!".
I always take treats in the hope that when he does go I can give him lots of praise but alas nothing! The minute we get home he's straight in the garden having a pee!
What can I do to encourage him or is it just a matter of time???

he wont be able to resist all those other male smell when he is a little older ....I wouldnt worry.

Do you have a command word that you use at home when he toilets? Once he has connected the word with the action required you could try using the word when you are out and about.
- By Boxer-newby [gb] Date 09.07.08 10:43 UTC
I do use a command at home but he seems to take no notice of it out on a walk. He does spend the whole walk with his nose to the ground sniffing about so maybe it's just all a bit too interesting at the moment and I'm being impatient.
It's so frustrating because I know he wants to go as the minute we get in it's a race to the back door and you can almost see the relief on his wrinkly little face!

Don't worry too much about it - he will once he is more relaxed about his surroundings.

Just keep encouraging him - he will eventually I am sure.

A lot of pups aren't confident enough to do their business in public. I guess you're a little vulnerable in a full squat. He'll probably start when his confidence builds. My pups have never been shy about going outside but sometimes a little slow to get on with things when I want them to go before going in to a class. I found that standing in one place usually results in the puppy sniffing at the end of their lead so they start circling me. I just keep turning in circles but stay in the same spot. That's usually enough to get them going so to speak. ;-)

Don't worry it will come, sometimes it's just a question of confidence.  At 3 months old you're probably only doing short walks with him anyway and there is so much else for him to be interested in.  Also, if you are practising walking to heel and general 'lead manners' your puppy might be too busy concentrating to remember to pee; just make sure he 'goes' before you leave on your walk.

Even in the garden most puppies have a preferred pee spot - usually near the back door - but as time goes on you'll probably find he's happier to go further afield.  It took a while for my now 12 month pup to even use a different part of the garden and he still likes to have a welcome home pee after a walk, even when you'd think there were no fluids left!!

My 5 yr old has very definite bladder and bowel preferences and tends to go in the same place, at the same time, most days...

thanks for the replies.
He gets on very well with my mum's german shepherd so maybe I'll take them out together and the old girl can show the little boy what to do!

This will sort out over time. I always felt a milestone had been passed with the first pee on a walk and as for the first poo, well party time!!!
- By Boxer-newby [gb] Date 09.07.08 11:19 UTC
"welcome home pee" sums it up very well. Made me chuckle!
- By Boxer-newby [gb] Date 09.07.08 11:21 UTC
Poor little thing is probably feeling loads of pressure too as I'm watching his every movement waiting for the moment he gets in pee position so I can get treats and praise at the ready. Not sure I'd want to go if I had a beady eye on my every step!

I shall back off and let nature take its course!

My pup was about 8 months old when he realised it was OK to 'toilet' on walks, despite me trying to prompt him with his 'toilet' commands, it wasn't as if he never needed to go when out as the moment he got home he would rush out to the garden for a wee. When he fathomed out he could go while on a walk he seemed very proud of it and enjoyed looking for a nice patch to go 'wee-wees', after a few days of doing that he even occasionally will do a 'poo-poo' on a walk, but he'd mostly rather do them in the garden (yay!! - saves carrying 'mastiff-mounds' home with me :) ).

Your pup will go to 'toilet' on walks when he feels ready too :)

LOL, I'm glad I'm not alone in getting exited about the very first first walk-time pooping :-D

It is quite normal for young animals not to advertise there presence to others outside the home until they get into the 'Kevin' stage. I always tell my new owners not to expect the puppy to go any where but in its own garden until about 5/6 months old,  of course there is always the exception.

I rushed home to tell OH Whistler had cocked his leg at 7 months old....

Just make sure your not scolding him when he does it inside or else he will be reluctant to do it infront of you out on a walkies.
- By Boxer-newby [gb] Date 10.07.08 16:55 UTC
I don't scold him for anything. We have a little exchange of looks sometimes but nothing more!!!

He's very good at going infront of me in the garden so I know that's not the issue. I'll just wait for him to go as and when he's ready when we're out and about!
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 10.07.08 21:38 UTC
I wasnt saying you do i know its just an issue with some that still use the rub their nose in it tale. im sure he will be fine maybe if he sees other doggies doing it.

My big girl Shady is 3 yrs old and has never peed or pooed on a walk in her life, she will hold herself until she gets home.
I'm not complaining though as I would rather clear up the garden than carry a poo bag for miles looking for an elusive bin.
My JRT on the other hand though always goes on his walks and much prefers to do it out rather than in the garden.
I wouldn't worry i am sure your dog will go on his walks eventually and if he doesn't don't worry, like i said at least you won't be lugging a full poo bag along with you.

One of my Collies is 2 years old and he very rarely toilets on a walk, My GSD always poops as soon as you go out even if she has just been in the garden and one of my other Collies poops about 5 times in the park ,making tiny little deposits each time, aren't dogs funny!
- By Snoop Date 14.07.08 05:42 UTC
I have the opposite problem. Oscar only likes to wee or poop out on a walk. Even last thing at night he'll refuse to wee outside, no matter how long I stand there without looking at him. I do worry he'll damage his bladder so it just means lots of trips out :-)
- By dvnbiker [gb] Date 16.07.08 15:13 UTC
I have exactly the same, Kai refuses to go in the garden unless he is absolutely desperate.  The other two couldnt care less where they go.
- By Boxer-newby [gb] Date 22.07.08 09:12 UTC
Hooray! Nero had a pee on his walk. I was so proud of him I nearly cried!
- By bint [gb] Date 22.07.08 10:22 UTC
That's good!
One of our dogs was about 18 months until he would pee with his lead on or anywhere strange. Was a right pain if you took him anywhere. He once went over 24hrs without passing a drop when we took him up to Aviemore. In the end he did an Austin Powers in the woods much to his & our relief!
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 23.07.08 09:37 UTC
I rememebr reading somewhere that to get pups out of this you should walk them as soon as you get up and not give them the choice to relieve outside as they usually do.
The pup will be forced to go as he cant hold it and presto problem solved after repeating a few times, Ive never had to use this method as both my hogs had no problem doing no1 or no2 outside from the start lol in fact they saved it just so they could poop outside a food shop with customers outside eating nearly every time or the local bakery LOL!!!

Best one was taking Whistler to the bank and he peed up the door post, mortified!!
