Topic Dog Boards / Health / prostrate gland - stud dog-hormone injection etc
- By Suffolk Maid [gb] Date 08.07.08 08:59 UTC
Hi all- I noticed on sunday night, that my dog was over straining as if constipated but it seemed quite extreme- took him to the vet the next day, who discovered swollen prostrate galnd and have been given pain killer, anti bioitics etc and going back tomorrow for a check to see how things are going and to see if he needs an injection, which will effect his testosterone levels etc .

Firstly, his health is the priority , without question but I have  aquery regarding the hormone injection, in case any of you have had  a smilar situation.

If the hormone injection is used, then obviously that will effect his testosterone and effect him in the future and he won't be able to be used for a few months anyway- I am wondering, have any of you had experience of  a dog, that has had the injection and gone on to sire pups ok or could it be hit and miss after that- that is IF we decided to carry on using him. I was wondering, if he had the injection, that would effect him for the future and maybe he should not be used again at all. I will stress that he is the priority but am asking, as obviously, he is a very good, solid, sound dog producing excellent pups, and it would be  as hame to lose that from the breed but he is priority. Does the hormone injection have  a lasting effect or not? Obvuioulsy, if it does long term- then maybe best to have him castrated anyway- to prevent this for the future. any replies form those of you who have had experience of  the injection etc

What injection is he to have ? There is a new to the UK treatment for prostate problems called Suprelorin it is in the form of an implant in the neck & lasts for 6 months. The dog will be either infertile or virtually so for a temporary period only, the normal fertility returns after the 6 months, I've not personally used a dog who has had the implant, but there are lots of studies done in the country of origin(New Zealand)that show the fertility levels do return.

I've had the implant done for my oldest BC & he no longer bothers my bitch at all

thankyou for quick reply? I wil lask the vet, what type of injection he was thinking of using? He put it off for a day,to see if treatment starts to reduce the swelling  because he said he was  a 'breeding male' and it would effect him. Any idea how long, they are effected after using injection or implant and any side effects.

I researched Suprelorin a good bit & there were no noted bad side effects. If you look on the link I sent you will see the effects timescale, it starts to act fairly rapidly

just read that- it seems pretty effective, doesn't it and seems that semen is back to pre implant after about a year. Thanks for that info.

I would guess he was thinking of using Tardak - which is meant to last about 4-6 weeks. Duibh had that once - for behaviour reasons - and it made him 10x worse - but if your dog is otherwise well balanced I would guess that wouldn't be a problem. Did look at Suprelorin - but I didn't like the idea of Duibh having a long lasting implant in - having said that he does have a microchip - but I personally prefer to minimise implants if possible.

This isn't a permanent implant like a chip it is a time release implant that exhausts after the alloted time(6/12 months)there's nothing left under the skin after the 6 months. I'm not one for implants either, but it has had the desired effect for Rjj

Yes I know it is meant to - but personally I didn't like the idea of a slow release implant. :-)
