Topic Other Boards / Foo / Dog remains in the garden!
- By pinkbrady [gb] Date 05.07.08 18:27 UTC
Last night one of our dogs was digging in the garden (nothing unusual there) then we spotted him chewing something on the patio. We went to investigate and it was a pelvic bone that he had dug up. Myself and OH went to the hole he had dug and started digging further (well OH dug and I was on torch holding duty) and found what I think were thigh bones and several ribs. After a bit more digging we got down to an old duvet which was full of bones and as we pulled it out of the ground the skull rolled out - definately a dog. We only found bones but the soil absolutely stank! I've no idea how long it has been there but we have been in the house for 2 years so longer than that. I don't know what to do with it though. I can't bury it because my dogs will just dig it up again and I'm not prepared to pay for it to go in a pet cemetery. I don't just want to throw it away though because its the remains of probably a well loved pet and I would hate for the remains of my pets to just get thrown away. Its in a bag at the moment away from my dogs but I need to do something with it quickly because it stinks! Any ideas?

what sthe differ ence between just throwing away in your rubbish or the vets rubbish??? Can you not dig a proper hole in the garden....about 4 feet should dissuade most ardent diggers!

I agree, whay not dig big hole and put a couple of slabs on top. It seem sad to disturb the remains any more.  I could not remove the remains myself anyway.

I would hope when the day comes that the vet would not be throwing my pet in the rubbish.  I think that is a terrible thing to say and I would sincerely hope that it isn't true.

I heard that they all go in together to be incinerated but no idea if it is true - horrible thought though :(

Yes, all clinical waste, which is what they are I'm afraid, must be incinerated.

I fail to see why its a horrible thing to say.....its all classed as clinical waste and taken away as such unless you pay for a private cremation. Thats how it is. If you dont want your dogs remains to be classed as clinical waste and thrown away, then you need to make alternative arrangements!

It's sort of three tiered Sam.  Private cremation, cremation with other pets or cremation with other clinical waste :-o
- By Lea Date 07.07.08 23:22 UTC
Private cremation cost alot more than euthanasia with clinic waste.
I know there is a 3 tier system.
1 =- private crem which for a rottie cross icluding euthenasia at home cost 180including a selecton of your dogs ashes (this is the part most vets wth crems dont tell you about!!!!
2 +private crem with ther animals and you get back a selection of ashes ( I honestly dont see the point)
And thowing your dog in wth clinical waste!!!! I have one of my dogs tht tht hs hapenwed to, pre private crem, and parents dogs it happened to.
The third option is what has happened for years if you could not dig the hole big enough for you dog!!!!
All small animals over the last 31 years I have been alive have been buried but the 3 dogs myself and mum and dd have had but don have been eft at vets :o :O but last dog I had PTS w privaty cremated as it was more the norm and she was still is my lfe and I couldnt cope ith her beng thrown in clnical waste the way most aimals are!!!!
hope that makes sense and helps!!

I think id put it back in the hole it came from, and plonk a couple of concrete slabs on top a few inches under the top layer of dirt/turf.

Very cheap, unless you filled it in the hole is already there, concrete slabs cost  a quid each or so, and no guilt at having disturbed what is clearly someones much loved pets grave.

I too would leave the dog to rest
