Topic Dog Boards / Behaviour / 6 month tibetan terrier - toilet training help please
- By janejacks [gb] Date 06.07.08 12:12 UTC
Hello, I've recently brought home a 6 month tibetan terrier boy. He's really well behaved, great fun and brilliant walking but does not like to go to toilet outside . He has been with other dogs in large kennel where he has always urinated inside . I have paper inside the house where he does his business regularly and this is what he is used to doing and it was always accepted before. I am patient with this but unsure how to proceed from this to him going outside to do his business.   I was hoping that after a few long walks he would start sniffing outside and mark his territory. However he is waiting to come home and do it on the paper. I am unsure of how to go ahead with the training.  I have  ground floor apartment but do not have own garden. Although am home with him all day (also very active so he is spending  lot of time outside, walks after meals, first thing in morning etc - at least 6 long walks a day at present)
Any help/advice much appreciated. Thanks.

you will hve to revert back to basics a phrase well used on this website!

treat him as you would a 7 wk old pup and start at the beginning . I train a pup by taking him out side every 20 to 30 minutes use  words for toilet I say 'be a good girl' as soon as they go lots of over enthusiastic praise .
After meals before bed and sometimes it pays to get up in the night and let them out. stay with him to toilet so that you know he has been.
If her has been kenneled I would imagine it will take a while for him to grasp that it is unacceptable to pee in the house as he will have been doing just that in his kennel .
You have to train his way of thought continually repeating the same routine will work its a pain but will work if you continue.

Also when a pup is about to toilet they usually sniff the floor ,circle as soon as you see these actions make a sound I say quick, quick, quick this usually stops them until you can guide them outside...then remember lots of praise so he knows he is doing good.
He may take a while to toilet on walks he has a routine he has been doing for 6m ...some dogs wont go outside thier toileting area at hme.

I agree with Starryeyes plan but I would also lift that paper.  That way at least you will get the signals when he is looking round for it.

You should probably follow what people do when they paper train dogs as an interim step to full house training.  Gradually move the paper closer and closer to the door that leads outside.  Take some soiled paper and put it outside when you know he needs to relieve himself and praise him profusely when he (finally) does.  Eventually he should start using outside without the paper.

If your dog is going to live inside the home, and over 90% of our pets do, you are going to have to go through the housebreaking process unless you have grossly different hygienic standards than most. It is not hard, it need not be messy, and it need not be a struggle. It does not have to take a long time. Remember that it is a training issue and you will need to have more than casual input. It will take some of your time but the more involved you get, the shorter that span will be.
