Topic Dog Boards / Health / Reaction to duramune booster
- By Gemma86 [im] Date 06.07.08 20:57 UTC
My boy had his first yearly boost last monday, on tuesday he had a swollen neck, vet said to come in thursday if hadn't gone down, he wasn't in so saw diff vet, she said its ok, if not gone down in a MONTH!!!!!!!!!! then come back, I told her each day it has felt harder and less fludiy but she said no no no its just fluid.

So everyday I kept feeling it and as I said its getting harder & harder each day and today he now has a hard lump(golf ball size) with some fluid around it(tennis ball size), why didn't she listen to me? I know shes a vet but i know how my dogs neck should feel and it had been changing since the first day of the swelling!
Its a bank holiday 2moz (Isle of Man) so vets isnt open but my friend on reception is going to have a word with the vet i usually see on tuesday.

Anyways has anybody else has this sort of reaction to boosters?

Fingers crossed he'll be ok, may not be able to show him at Working & Pastoral next week if it doesnt go down :(

Don't know about Duramune but, according to Intervet who make Nobivac, a diffuse swelling is to be expected in up to 10% of dogs.  They do say they expect it to go down within a few days but I suspect there will be much variation.

Duramune Contra-indications, warnings, etc
Following the first vaccination, it is very common for puppies to develop a small visible swelling (<2 cm) lasting for generally only two days. Following the second vaccination, it is very common for a small visible swelling (up to 5 cm) to be seen at the injection site, which may last for up to five days. The swelling may be painful for 1-2 days. In most cases these small and transient injection site reactions resolve with no need for treatment.
In very rare cases, type I hypersensitivity reactions (facial oedema, urticaria, anaphylactic reaction), vomiting and diarrhoea may be observed after vaccination. In the event of an allergic or anaphylactic reaction, immediate appropriate symptomatic treatment should be given.
If you notice any serious effects or other effects not mentioned in this leaflet, please inform your veterinary surgeon.

Take dog back to the vet as soon as you can.
Tell the vet that stated a month to read the above link or print it and hand it over to that vet.
Also ask for this Adverse Reaction to be reported.
If they refuse then you report the adverse reaction http://www.vmd.gov.uk/
If your not happy with your vets get a second opinion asap to be on the safe side.

I hope your boy feels much better soon

One of my dogs had a reaction to Duramune.  He was extremely depressed - did not want to move, his tail tucked between his legs for about 24 hours.  Given he never reacted like that before to vaccines the next time he was due I took him to another vet who did not use Duramune.  He was fine.
