Really shocked to see that Clive Hornby has passed away at 63!  He went off ill from Emmerdale a few months ago, didn't realise that he was that ill though. 

I hadn't heard that.  What a shame, I know they were expecting him to be returning to work at some stage. :(

What a shock.  I had no idea he had been ill, just thought he was taking a break from the series.

Oh dear.....didn't know that either...he must be longest standing cast member.
I remember him being the wayward brother of Joe, he was an author and I think he lived on the continent, not at home with Annie his ma, so we didn't see so much of him. I do rememeber he was reluctant about farming though.

He was in Emmerdale for such a long time, the cast must be very upset as well as his family,

He wasn't the original 'Jack Sugden', there was another actor playing the part when it was 'Emmerdale Farm' in the early 70's!

He'd been in the show for 28 years.  They are not divulging the illness that he had though, which is a bit strange in this day and age.

Didn't his son and the mother to him in real life play his wife at one point on the show and also their son was Robert Sugden for a short while?

he was one of the longest serving current cast members i think. He played Jack Sugden from 1980 before that the character of Jack was played by Andrew Burt 72-74 with a brief return in 76.

I dont know about sons and mothers etc playing Jacks wife and children however I do know Robert sugden was played by

Christopher Smith 89-2001
Karl Davis  2001-2005.

Sarah Sugden was played by
Melanie Howard 88-94
Alison Spyro 94-200

P.s Jack's first wife was Pat Merrick(his childhood sweetheart) ,played by Lynn Dalby and Helen Wier She had a son called Jackie Merrick ( who went on to marry Kathy)and he turned out to be Jacks son.Pat was killed in a car crash in 86 leaving Jack to bring up their then baby son Robert on his own

If you mean was Jack an author.... Jack  left  to live in Italy and write a book in 76 .... this story line covered the fact that origional Jack actor Andrew Burt was leaving the soap for good.

At the end of News at 10 last night, they said it was his final wishes that his cause of death wasn't made public.

Yeah, don't know where the cancer part came in but on every website I've looked at it says that the family do not want to disclose his illness!

The actor who plays Eric Watsiname was interviewed on ITN & said he had been fighting the Big C, it was also in the sun

Also he married the actress who played the first wife & had a son they were divorced in 2000 I think

Yes thats right he married Helen Wier the 2nd actress to play Pat Merrick
