I am looking for a bit more info than I can find right now, I whelped my friends cavs litter in Feb all were around 250g born, all went to good homes.  The problem that I have now is my bitch has had hers (all screening done) all reserved, but i think they are quite small the smallest is 156g  two at 177g and the largest at 240g not so botherd about the large one but the others seam very small to me and mum is pushing them all away, she keeps curling up in a ball.  I am in a right tizz.  Each time they cry I latch them on as she wont let them under her legs, she looks at them as if she doesn't know or has ever seen them before.

I took them all to vets this morning he said they are fine, am i just freeting because of the size?

Is it still early days?  Is it her first litter?  She will probably settle, but being in a tizz is allowed, we all worry don't we?  If your vet thinks things are ok, just continue latching them on, you're doing the right thing.  I am sure that he has checked out all the problems such as palette etc.  I bet in a few days she will settle down just fine.  :-)

I worry constantly about our's......Pippa was a bit like your bitch at first and curled up which made it difficult. 3 weeks on and I still worry! Now the problem is there just isn't room for all 12 of them clamouring at once and she gets fed up. I have to say, they are all gaining steadily though so she can't be doing a bad job.

Sorry what are those weights in ounces?  I'm an old fashioned girl!

My Cavalier pups were 280g and 284g (10 oz and 10.5 oz) at birth, they were real bruisers though, I don't know where Ellie was hiding the pair of them!! If your girl had more than that it's not surprising they weighed less at birth. And I had to spend the first day or two latching them on as they didn't seem to have worked out they needed to close their mouths to suck - they got there in the end though. Ellie also liked to curl up, but with only two it was fairly easy to find somewhere to latch them without having to uncurl her to often. As long as they are gaining steadily I wouldn't worry. :-)

156grm = approx 5.1/2oz   177grm = approx 6oz  240grms = approx 8.1/2oz

My last litter I had one little girl who was smaller than the rest at birth, by the time they reached 2 weeks old she had caught up with the rest of the litter, so as long as they are all gaining weight I wouldn't worry 'too' much (easier said than done)

Just to let you know we had a bad night but at 4.00 am we had cracked it, weiged pups this morning and they had put on between 10 and 20 which I thougt was good.  I had to go shopping and left hubby in charge to cut a long story short we have lost one of our little baies.  I am devastated.

Oh no, thats awful. So sorry to hear that.
Can i ask why you lost one? If its too soon to talk yet i totally understand, just intrigued to know as you thought you had "cracked it"

I just don't know I am going to the vets again this evening and will be taking the little one with me, I can't believe what happened..  Hubby said they were all fine so went to feed the other dogs and put his dinner on ,when he came back with her dinner she had shoved it into a corner and when he picked it up it was limp, he breathed on it, rubbed its body to try and get it going to no avail, I just don't know, I said huuby wasn't watching them properly he said he was, now we aren't speaking as I do blame im.

Try not to take it out on him. he's probably feeling awful as it is, although it is nice to blame someone it could just be one of those things & may have easily happened if you were watching them.

With our second litter mum sat on one of her pups and sadly killed it, in the few minutes it took me to see my mum out of the front door and return to the whelping box :(

Sorry to hear you lost one of your babies, run free little one.

It's so easy for them to sit on one, I can only imagine how you must feel but try not to blame the hubby, he's probably feeling terrible about it himself. And who knows, perhaps the vet will find a problem with the little one that your bitch had sensed and she was trying to push her away from the others. So sorry to hear you lost one. :-(

I have been to the vet, cant find anything wrong, they checked her calcium level that was normal, so none the wiser really.  she has fed the pups tonight but doesn't like them to lie wth her, any suggestions guys as I am at my limit I know i'm tired but dont want to loose anymore.

The most important thing is that they are kept warm and are feeding.  If mum doesn't want to lie with the puppies - I presume she is leaving the box?  then perhaps you could take them to her.  At this stage they wont take long to suckle the amount they need.  They will only be feeding for a few minutes each but often around once or twice an hour.  it will be exhausting for you but I would suggest that you keep putting them on mum when ever she is lying still.  If she looks worried when you place a pup on the teat just reassure her.  Is she washing the pups as they will need her to be cleaning their bottoms so that thye can go to the loo.  You could try putting something tasty on their bottoms (honey or something similar).  Don't give up - perhaps you and your husband could take shifts tonight.  Just make sure you know which pup has fed before you rest lay down for shut eye.  I do hope it goes okay for you.

So sad to read your news, how terribly sad for you.
Try not to blame your hubby, as others have said, these things can happen so quickly. Time is a healer but you will be hurting for quite some time. I am so sorry.

Just to let you all know everyting is fine today mum and pups have settled well and the pups have each put on around 40g overnight, they only woke me 3 times and the 3rd time it was lucky as we had over slept for school.

Just to ask, have you forgiven your hubby yet? He must have been devasted too and waiting for you to come home so he could tell you must have been hell :(
