hi ya...
i'm new on here, so bare with me please...
my bitch will be on her 35th day on friday after mating. she is a maiden bitch. i would like to have her scanned next week at home. would any of you know of any mobile pet ultrasound services round the leics area. the nearest i can find is at milton kynes. if i can't find one nearer then i will call that one.
also she is very hard to feed at the moment so she is on cooked chicken breast, veg and rice, and i also mix in some freeflow minced chicken to make up the amount she is eating. have you any suggestions on what to tempt her with. her normal diet is pal complete mixed with freeflow. she is a giant breed...

Can I ask why you want her scanned at home as my dogs have always been happy to go to their regular vets, as I scan twice and always have once at 28-30 days and one at around 50 days.

hi ya...
i would prefer her to be scanned at home because she gets stressed when she goes to the vets and i don't want to cause her  any sort of stress especially at this time in her pregnancy (if she is pregnant)
- By MandyC [gb] Date 25.06.08 22:34 UTC
i have never scanned before and did for the first time last year, the one and only time i ever have and that bitch went on to reabsorb her litter, obviously it may of happened anyway but i wont be scanning again. i would only scan if i was concerned in anyway as the scan is more for our benefit because we want to know!

obviously others on here will say that they always scan and that is just peoples own choices, if my bitch is happy and healthy then that is good enough for me, the less stress and visits to the vets when pregnant the better in my opinion. good luck :)

Hi

You could try Candleby Lane Vets at Cotgrave Nottingham. Tel 0115 9893711. I have had my bitch scanned at the vets as one of the vets their has a mobile scanner for horses. But I might be wrong but I thought you had to do the scan about 24 days becuase after that their is to much fluid around to get a good scan.

Remember that the vast majority of pregnancies in this country is scanned at least once, and it causes no harm to the baby.

Maybe you are getting mixed up with palpating.  After 24 days it is difficult to palpate because there is too much fluid.  A scan can be done any time but things can be seen best after 24/30 days

Suzie, if it is not too far to travel I use a lovely lady in Nuneaton. She has a human scanner that she bought surplus stock from the hospital and does the scanning in her living room. The dogs are relaxed as she will play and talk to them first. She costs £18 and you can go back as many times as you wish included in that cost. She runs a cattery called paws-a-while in Nuneaton if you want her number pm me

I've never ever scanned my girls, not felt the need to really.  My friend (used my boy) had her bitch scanned at 5 weeks and told definitely nothing there.  The owners knew that there was something so had her rescanned 2 weeks later and told one maybe two pups, she went on to have 5 normal weight pups

I have a foster girl in with me at the mo, she came to me and we thought shes was in whelp, the guy who does my scans scanned her and there was 3 pups, took her for a check up at the vets and he said could feel any pups so arranged for a scan, scanned her said nope no puppies, definatly not, brought her home and a few days later my normal scanner came out just to check her as i was now very confused, and yep 3 puppies, even have a pic of it, it was all very confusing lol.
Good luck with your girls scan

I know the feeling :-)  My vet admits hes not very good at scanning as its not something he does alot of, thats why i prefer to use the person that comes out to me, hes a small animal vet but hes mainly doing farm animals now and hes normally scanning quite alot, so he has more experiance of it.
When is your girl being scanned?
- By LindaMorgan [gb] Date 27.06.08 08:54 UTC
My vet also has an old hospital baby scanner and he measures the pups for you, we get pics, its a fantastic sight to see.

I get mine scanned at around 31 days.

Im lucky because my vets are part of a group that have several clinics in and around Portsmouth. They have a main central hospital facility and its there they do the scans. They only have one vet (to my knowledge) who does the scans and he is very good.

I scan to get a rough idea of how many to expect and of course to confirm pregnancy.

Obviously judging by other posters experiences with scanning its not always effective but Ive personally never had a problem.

Hi, I am new to champdogs, but I was interested by your post. My bitch (lab) is 35 days and was I told by one vet who scanned her at 28 days that she had no puppies. In fact he said she had uterus infection and  put her on antibiotics.  I was not convinced, as she was showing signs such as enlarged vulva with clear discharge. I took her to a different vet who was highly recommended, his scanner was broken, so he just palpated her and said he could feel at lead one pup.  I still wanted to be sure that she was pregnant and got her scanned at another local vet, who confirmed that she was indeed pregnant, but could only see one or two pups . He said for me to come back in a week and he would scan again for free. So, went tonight to be told that he couldn't see anything. She is still showing signs of pregnancy, enlarged abdomen, enlarged vulva, clear discharge etc. I AM NOW VERY CONFUSED, I guess the only thing to do now is wait and see how things progress over the next few weeks. I dont think that I would ever scan again due to what has happened.
- By kelly mccoy [us] Date 21.08.08 20:02 UTC
it might be a good idea to do a blood test to confirm the pregnancy
- By hayley123 Date 21.08.08 20:12 UTC
i dont understand why people have to know if their bitch is in whelp, why not just see what happens?  even when a pregnancy has been confirmed its possible for the bitch to absorb the puppies
- By white lilly [gb] Date 21.08.08 20:17 UTC
i had scan done on my girl with her last litter ,i was told maybe 3/4 she had 11 lol so dont worry ,ive always watched the puppies moving and kicking at the end of the pregneny
good look !!!x x x

Hi, I had thought about doing the relaxin blood test, but the problem is that if she is carrying a small litter, a false negative can show up. I don't want to throw any more money away, as I have spent a fortune on progesterone tests,(just to try and get her pregnant), stud fees , scans etc. What I would love to know is, how common is it for pups to be there and not show on a SCAN. I just feel very disappointed now.
- By white lilly [gb] Date 21.08.08 20:42 UTC
ive none of pups to be born and not seen on scan ,thay can be hidden high up some times ,so if you wait alittle longer you might see them moveing about x
- By PINKLADY [in] Date 21.08.08 20:54 UTC
Hi, thanks for the advice, I will control my lack of patience from now on and just wait . LOL!
- By white lilly [gb] Date 21.08.08 20:59 UTC
i know how you feel lol it exciteing ,good look and i hope she has a beautiful healthy litter xx

> i dont understand why people have to know if their bitch is in whelp

One of the reasons for me it is so that those hoping for a puppy are not waiting on my list needlessly when I can hopefully get them on another breeders list before it is too late.

It is terribly disappointing to be on a breeders waiting list since before mating wait probably 3 months to find there is no litter, at least if I have my bitches checked for pregnancy they have a month less of this.  Of course they may be disappointed if the wrong sex are born or not enough pups, but for this reason I don't like taking more bookings than the average litter size.  Once I have 3 for each sex I warn people that of course I might not have a pup for them but I will sort them out with other breeders if I don't.

Also I need to know if I need to change the feeding regime, start the in whelp worming protocol, stop entering shows etc.
- By hayley123 Date 22.08.08 12:38 UTC
i can see where you are coming from but i would never do it
- By Paris [gb] Date 22.08.08 13:48 UTC
Hi

The Relaxin blood tests are very reliable if done correctly and should produce a positive result even with a small litter from 33 days.
They come in at cost price £54 for a box if five tests so your vet shouldnt charge the earth per test.
- By pugnut [gb] Date 22.08.08 16:20 UTC
I do it for the same reasons Brainless.

Plus I like to know roughly what to expect pups wise (small or large litter), especially if the bitch is a maiden. Obviously theres no guarantee on a definate amount but my vet is usually pretty good and very close to the mark.

It also saves on setting up the whelping box! (being as having it in the bedroom is a sore point as it is for my OH lol)
- By PINKLADY [in] Date 22.08.08 18:27 UTC
Hi,

I agree with pugnut, this is my girls first litter (and mine) and because of the preparation involved with whelping, I thinks its a good idea to know at least if there is a pregnancy. However, I am just back from a vet who deals with alot of the greyhound people and I am glad to confirm that she is indeed pregnant. The scan was very clear and I find it hard to believe how an experienced vet could miss it, especially as she is 38 days. It just goes to show that vets do get it wrong!!!!! Sometimes its best to trust your own instincts, I just hope everything goes well and she has an easy whelp.
