Bit more of the oldie stuff :)

What hairstyles did you have? Colours, etc, and any total disasters? Did you use curling tongs, heated rollers, those awful huge plastic rollers, home perms, home colours? How did you make your hair into 'big hair' in the 80's?
- By CherylS Date 20.06.08 16:16 UTC
I've always had big hair, it's naturally very curly.  Sometimes it's in fashion, mostly it's not but I'm not bothered anymore.

When I was a teen, I was desperate for straight hair but the products and techniques weren't available.  I use to blowdry it as straight as possible with the flickback like Farah Fawcett Majors and then curse the weather if it was damp because it would all go to frizz.

Then a hairdresser had the brilliant idea of perming it in big rollers so that the curls weren't so tight and I came out with an afro!!!

DITTO :-D

Everybody says they love my hair, long, thick, curly....most days I hate it and would love it to be smooth and sleek.

Was the first one on my estate to have 'streaks' ( highlights as is now :) ) Had the blond bits dyed blue !!!

Then came my poodle perm and farah fawcett LOL

Now I'm going grey (rather quickly :( ) I home dye all the time with never a mishap! Nearly always have my hair up now too so shoud have the lot chopped off. Sopmetimes wish we didn't have hair or eyebrows so wouldn't have bad hair days.
Have you noticed your hair style always goes right when you've booked the hairdresser?

Oooh, my worst one:  Decided to dye my hair one evening a nice auburn colour (I'm mid brown) and was away to rinse when pump broke down for (private) water supply!!!  Ended up going down to burn to fill bucket to rinse hair.  Hair was bright orange!!  Not a good look at all and dyed it back the next day!

My sis had a purdey :-D

What do you mean 'bright orange not a good colour".  I'm always bright orange!  Well, darker orange - bright in the summer sun!  Also extremely curly.  My mother insisted on keeping my hair short in childhood.  As an adult, leaving longer is better, because the curls are more ringletty instead of tight.  On the whole, I've had the same style for about 15 years (length can vary).  I'm not very adventurous.

Hey, I don't mean your natural auburn colour, this was virtually luminous!!  It must have taken me about 20 minutes to get a bucket of water, so you can imagine!  eeeek!

A 'feather cut' then a 'shaggy perm'.
Then very hippy........long straight and it was quite glorious really.
Straight, very black and beautifully glossy. I didn't appreciate then what I had.
Always wanted it to be curly.
Now white bits (natural)...dyed in scarlet that has gone a bit gingery and dyed in blue black which is great fun,

I had just my fringe permed (a tight perm) when I was about 16. I really don't know what on earth I was thinking! I really did look a sight!
This thread has made me smile - so thanks for the giggle :-)

always have had red hair, like my profile pic.  I have on occassion decided to try other colours, I did blonde (not to long ago), burgendy, and brown.

Straight straight straight.  I have done a couple perms, but they never turn out nice, so I straighten them anyways with a curling iron. (I dont have a working straight iron)

My mom was telling me a story, well two actually, and they may be funny to share.  Mind you, I was a kid (like young!!!!) at the time, so dont think I do it often lol!

First one:
I heard on a tv programme that peanut butter had oils in it that would make your hair softer and shinier (they were talking about when you actually eat PB).  Well, I took a 2 lb jar of PB, and plopped it on my hair!  My mom has a pic of it, as it does look funny!  But yeah, I thought in my 2 year old brain, that it would really work!

Second One:
I tryed cutting my bangs when I was a kid, and I cut them so short, I swear they were shorter than the hair on a shaved poodle!  Looked hideous!

Oh, just remembered this one too!
I decided I wanted to dye my hair a nicer red, but mom wouldnt let me.  I was too young (grade 6).  So I went to my friends house for a weekend sleepover, and dyed my hair with red Bingo dabber!  Well, my mom was so mad!  Anyways, my friend and I decided we wanted to go swimming at the local pool, and so I got my swimsuit and went.  Get to the pool, and started to do summer salts in the water.  Anyways, on the third time I did it, all the red bingo dabber started coming out!  Lifeguards jumped in figuring I had hit my head, and grabbed me, while I was still under water.  My mom said she would have loved to be a fly on the wall for that one!

I had a full lion cut perm all curly and down my back. Then i used to have it coloured using brown henna, sat for about three hours with mud on your hair basically.
Now its really short and spikey and I have lo lights put in. Good thing is that in my family we don't go grey easily so I am over 50 and have about 8 grey hairs. People think i am younger than ,my OH he was a white blonde is now white and I am older but with hardly any grey!! My Dad is 78 and only gone grey in the past 4 or 5 years.

I have really dark hair almost black. I  have often used henna  it makes it a lovely chestnut colour. One time I decided to use the black rather than red henna, just for a change. It went a lovely shade of green, not bright green but like my hair was slightly mouldy!!!!

One other time I   dyed it  my hair went the strangest colour. I phoned up the advice line number on the packet and they told me to use Head and Shoulders and leave it on for ten mins as it brought the colour down.Well I either heard wrong or the info was duff because my hair melted into like lumps of chewing gum and I had burns all around my neck... My hairdresser spent about 2 hours cutting and treating my hair for me. Did a dam good job too. And she berated DIYers the whole time LOL

Thats terrible! Hope it didn't scar you.

My daughter was told to use H and S too because it strips the colour out. She has dyed her hair black for the last couple of years but wanted to go lighter. It worked somewhat, she now has highlights put in and her base colour is dark caramel.

Only emotionally LOL

When I had highlights put in once the hairdresser told me not to use Johnsons baby shampoo because it took the colour out. Don't know if this is right or not tho.

I have been straight (chemically), permed, long, short, purple, black, blond, red, blonde highlights, bright red stripes, red low-lights. Had lots of hair disasters, I have very very thick dark brown hair which lots of hairdressers couldn't be bothered to cut properly.......until my sister became a hairdresser now she does all of our hair so no more bad hair days!!

I too have long hair which I tie up most days!
- By AliceC Date 27.06.08 21:34 UTC
I've got naturally blonde hair and when I was 13 I decided to dye it brown. I got my friend to put the dye in, but we obviously didn't leave it in long enough. It turned bright pink and my new nickname became "Strawberry" (as in strawberry blonde!!)

My hair now is long, I can never be bothered to straighten it but I don't wear it down unless it's straightened, so it's always up. I'm lucky as one of my best friends is a hairdresser and he will always cut it for me for free :-)
