Advice please.
I wormed my bitch with panacur 10% from day 40 to 2 days post whelping.
A breeder friend says not to use Panacur for the pups as she thinks there is a lot of resistance to it (I have found this in the horse world too) so I have bought Drontal puppy liquid with the intention of starting them at 2 weeks. The book says to worm the bitch too but the drontal says don't give it to lactating bitches. Should I give her the panacur liquid again? What do you all do please?
I wormed by bitch during pregnancy with Panacur. When I wormed the pups I used Drontal Puppy Susp and did mum with the Panacur. I did that every time pups were wormed (with Dronatl) until the Panacur ran out. Pups are now 13 weeks and I kept one. Have wormed him every two weeks with the Drontal and now mum with the Drontal Plus.
Hope this helps.

For how many days do you advise worming a lactating bitch with 10%panacur suspension ?.My pups are 3 weeks old and have been given a treatment of given Drontal Puppy .
The mother was given the Panacur from day 45 to birth .
I wormed my bitch on the same days that I wormed the puppies.

I wormed my bitch at the same time as the pups with the panacur but gave her a normal size dose instead of the small dose she had through pregnancy.

i use panacur on both pups and bitch and have never had any problems

I used the panacur paste on them at 2 weeks, easier to administer. Mum was given the liquid. Next week they will all have the panacur liquid as would need too many tubes now :)

I used the pregnant bitch dose yesterday . I was quite shocked today that she passes a stool with a fair few dead worms in it . After having a full dose of worming tablet on April 15th pre mating ,and 16 days of worming treatment before the pups were born(they came early )how can she possibly have contracted worms ? This is the 4 th litter in 8 years and its never happened before .

She probably hasn't picked them up since worming last, although she might have done. All bitches carry immature eggs in their blood stream that are activated during pregnancy. This is why we worm again. You may not have seen them in past but that does not mean they were not there, particularly if you used a different type of wormer as some work by expelling worms from the gut and others work by killing them and breaking them down so nothing recognisable is passed.

Thanks for the reply. you are correct , I did use a different wormer in Spain with the others .
It was just a bit shocking seeing the worms though , I think its a revultion I have .
I suppose the puppies will be as bad , I should have wormed them at 2 weeks not 3 as I have done, my main reason was that the tiny pup of the litter was still so very small at 2 weeks .She has caught up a bit now . I though 3, 5 and 7 weeks would be fine .

PippaJ says she used a normal adult dose not the half dose for a pregnant bitch , would you recomend I give her the other half ?

Always give the dose the manufacturers recommend. The data sheet should give the recommended dose for lactating bitches.

There was actually no data sheet in the box just instructions on the box refering to pregnant bitches , puppies and adults .Is there usually an instruction sheet with Panacur 10%? if there normally isn't I will contact the company .
Ive found my pet meds brochure and its all there with 2 full pages of instructions including info for lactating bitches .I followed the pregnant bitch dose which is not correct , It says give a full adult dose each time you worm the pups .I have given the correct dose now .
They really should include nursing bitches on the box as well , but I know now and I won't forget in the future .
Thanks for your help

It's a while since I used Panacur suspension but I seem to remember the data is on a peel aside label on the tub but you can always find data on all veterinary medicines on the NOAH
site.
There does not appear to be any different dose for lactating bitches and nothing in the contraindications so I would give the normal adult dose.
