Topic Dog Boards / Breeding / Weaning pens?
- By PippaJ [gb] Date 18.06.08 16:00 UTC
Does anyone have any experience of these? We are going to have to accommodate quite a few bouncy pups before long, a friend suggested a weaning/puppy pen but I'm not really sure of the advantage over a big cage which we already have.
Thoughts please?

Never yet seen a cage big enough for all but the smallest breed.  Even a  four foot square or double size puppy pen will soon be too small for all but temporary accommodation and pups Will need to have time outdoors in part of the garden that can be baby puppy proofed (this is where the puppy pen panels with the rods that can be pushed into the ground come into their own as you can make a large pen that is stable.  They will also need some form of shelter for when outdoors, as some will want to play while others sleep, and you'll never keep up with them.

Thanks for that, could you point me in the direction of a puppy pen please as all the ones I have seen are no bigger than my cage!
We do have a dog run and a shed so they can go outside for times when they are much older but I need something for in the house to contain them.

We have sectioned off our kitchen for our pups. We've boarded an area across and made a door which at the moment is open for mum to get in/out but as they grow is adjustable. They have their whelping box as their bedroom and they do come out of it to go to toilet by themselves. We do have a tiled floor so easy to clean. Loads of room for everyone in there including me!!!
Outside we secure a area and place waterproff sheeting down so they no in contact with ground. We are with them outside.

I borrowed my friend's puppy pen but put it together with the whelping box, that way they had somewhere to sleep, and somewhere to wee and poo, and of course we let them out loads for free play and socialising!

They are always advertised in the back of Dog World and Our Dogs. You buy them by the panel, with or without a gate, which just slot together so you can make them any size you want.

"Speedwellstar".10am and 5.30pm. (01543 473 344)

I just bought an 8 panel play pen of these people above of ebay. It has the rods that stake into the ground and has 8 x 2ft width panels for about £35 + £7.50 postage & was delivered the next day. I'm well happy and think I have had a good deal as seen them elsewhere for about £65. Give them a ring. But dont go for the 6 panel one that only a few quid cheaper go for the 8 panel one it's worth it. I know you carnt say what breed dog you have on this forum but my breed of dog that I have bought it for is large breed puppies.

Hope this helps

have a look on ebay, they have all sorts of pens/crates/panels there, very often from the same people that advertise in the papers but a bit cheaper :)

Thank you everyone, I am watching one on ebay but wasn't sure it was big enough. Seems a good buy at that price though!

This is a great pen,  individual panels and you can buy more, they are the type the rods go through. I haev had one for about 8 years now. Brillaint for a large breed and heavy enough they won't tip it too easily.. I bought it with 4 panels and couldn't believe the size of it.

Thanks for that Blue, that looks to be a good buy too.

I got a Wranglers pen off ebay, a bit more expensive but very well worth it if you are having more than one litter and even if not, it will sell on easily.   They are extremely strong and hardwearing.  He doesn't have any for sale on ebay at the moment, but he has an online shop I believe, wranglers pet products.
