Topic Dog Boards / General / Lakeland or Fell???
- By Gowron7 [us] Date 19.06.08 18:50 UTC
I bought Lola last year for my wife and she was sold to us as a Lakeland terrier. the mother was a black and tan but the litter were all black apparently as was the father.
shortly after Lolas arrival our other dog had to be put down and so we went out and purchased Tikka a black and tan patterdale (nuttall lines) this prompted me to do some research before we got either dog we looked into the breed and suitability on wikipedia but I felt that although i would not be working the dogs it would be good to know more about the origins of the breeds. during this research i read the book patterdale terriers by sean frain (excellent book very informative) in which he states that there are no black lakelands and that they are in fact fell terriers. not a lot of differnce I know but has anyone else come accross this issue??

According to the Kennel Club they come in black.  Is she registered?

Unforunately not it would make the issue a whole lot clearer.

The breed standard for Lakelands says under colour:

Colour
Black and tan, blue and tan, red, wheaten, red grizzle, liver, blue or black. Small tips of white on feet and chest undesirable but permissible. Mahogany or deep tan not typical

So yes, they do come in black.

They do come in black, I have seen one being shown (in Finland)

If she is not registered quite what she is is anyones guess.  I am in the Lakes a lot and go to the country shows where classes are held for the working terriers but have never quite worked out whats what.  So long as you appreciate that is a real working terrier you have I can't imagine it matters much.

Thanks for your help as i said, it did say on wikipedia that they came in black it was the comment in the book that started me thinking (always dangerous).
either way she is a lovely dog and that is what counts.

i think gowran is talking about a working lakeland.....which is also they type I have...they are not much like KC lakelands!!  Sean Frains books are very good and  working lakies are normally either red or black/tan and the bkacks are considered to be fells.

Ah I see, that will be why I have so much trouble distinguising them at shows although I did know these were the working strain I was looking at.

This could well be where the confusion has come in.
