I picked some up 500mg and thought ok i could just cut it in quarters or something but its a jell cap- Now I gotta figure out how to give him that and how much. Hubby poked a hole in one and squeezed it out and its actually quite thick to...

Any idea's? Junior only being 25 pounds 500 mg is prob way to much.

With our Vet's OK we gave our 56 lb Lab girl 900 mg twice a day.  What does your Vet say?

Our 22kg border has 500g

Make sure  you get the glucosiamine HCL dogs bodied cannot assimilate the sulphate  so you will just be wasting your money otherwise!!

I think youll be fine giving your boy that as it is, you cant really overdose on Glucosamine. I give my 35kg dogs 1200mg high strength tablets and a separate chondroitin supplement.
Id just put it in a piece of cheese and feed it that way if he wont eat it.

Whats this used for?
- By Pugnacious [gb] Date 18.06.08 22:07 UTC
Hi, it's used to maintain joint health and promote cartlage synthesis depending upon its composition. I can recommend Flexivet Start, which is a Chondroitin/Glucosamine mix. It is available at www.vetuk.co.uk for £36, which will last my 25kg dog for six months. It is not advisable to use preparations for humans as the mode of action is not suited to our friends.

Would it be recommended following a cruciate repair in more of a prophylactic role regarding cartilage/meniscal damage?

Thank you :)

Talked to my vet and she said its fine to give him one in the morning and one at night. So thats what Iam doing, I'm also giving some to Tiva who just turned 10yrs old. So Iam hoping this will help them feel a little better. Iam usuing it on Junior cause he goes lame once in awhile on his front leg- she thinks he may have pulled some legimets, and stiff in the back leg and he may also have arthritis starting as well. Tiva she gets kinda sore in the back leg.

How long does it usually take before you start to notice a difference?

In a growing dog, yes- Flexivet Start, in an adult- Flexivet Go. I am using Start on an eight month old large breed and the results are fab! Below is the info providedby the manufacturer.

Flexivet is a two-step nutritional supplement for the management of arthritis in dogs and cats. Flexivet Start, the initial step, helps limit joint degradation and optimise cartilage synthesis. It's dual action is conferred by the combination of two chondroprotectors - chondroitin sulphate and glucosamine. It is the only veterinary joint supplement that contains chondroitin sulphate from a sustainable marine source. It is safe to supplement long term with Flexivet Start. However, once arthritis symptoms are under control, the dose of Flexivet Start may be reduced or alternatively, owners may wish to change to Flexivet Go. Flexivet Go, the maintenance step, is a highly cost effective long term joint supplement which can be used following Flexivet Start. Flexivet Go contains one chondroprotector - glucosamine, which helps to prolong the natural life of joints.

Good Luck!

Hi Dollface,

Now, I've always been a bit sceptical about supplements, but I am telling you, for my pup-within a week there was an improvement!
- By dollface Date 19.06.08 23:24 UTC
So I should notice a difference in a week or so with him and her, that would be nice :)

Iam giving them one in the morning and one at night as well- How long should I keep that up, should I cut it down to one a day instead of two in a couple of months or just keep it at 2 for good?
- By Pugnacious [gb] Date 20.06.08 05:44 UTC
Hi Dollface, sounds like both dogs are adults. the dose of glucosamine in the product I suggested is 900mg x 1 daily per 30kg weight. So the 25lb dog should have half a tab of this product-Flexivet Go. It retails at just over £7 for 60 tabs here, but I notice that the Flexivet Start has risen in price by almost £10 for the 200 tab pack!! Still it's worth it. I'll probably get away with with the Go tabs, when he finishes this pack as he will be about 13mths old then.

What would you recomend for a pup 5 months old , small breed back legs looking bowed?
- By Pugnacious [gb] Date 20.06.08 22:43 UTC
Hi emma5673, obviously I'm delighted with the product I've chosen, and it sells for about £42. Your small breed pup will only need half a tab per day, so the 200 pack would last well over a year. Make sure if you buy a big pack, you get a long expiry date though.
