Topic Dog Boards / Health / Spayed Bitch

Hi, I am new to this message board.  I had my bitch spayed last July, she had a season on September and another in March.  The vet did an op in may to find out what was going wrong, thought maybe something had been left in or that the stump hadn't been tied off properly, but nothing she was as a spayed bitch should be, he thinks that she is producing eastrogen from her petruity glad, which is in her brain.  He said that we could inject her with hormones, to stop her being so attracted to the males, although that is not something that I will do (I have a big problem with hormones).  I just wondered if this has happened to anyone else and if so how was it dealt with.  Any advice greatly appreiciated.  oh and she is in season again after 3 months.

Have had exactly the same problem. Routine spay op carried out on a 2yr old lab, but 6 months later she was 'in season' her vulva was enlarged and she was vet attractive to dogs, her urine was was very sweet.
We obviously dismissed any thought of her really being in season and put it down to being affected by another bitch who was in season. The problem reoccurred every 6 months, eventually after we had complaints from the council about our dogs barking we went back to vets.
A simple urine test revealed large amounts of eostrogen. The vet diagnosed Retained Ovarian Tissue Syndrome, we were given 3 options, do nothing, treat with drugs, have a second operation.
We dismissed doing nothing as a non starter for the sanity of ouselves our dogs and our long suffering neighbours.
We could not contemplate drug suppression due to her life expectancy and side effects of the drugs.
We decided to have the operation, it was not without risk as the initial procedure was exploratory, to find where the ovarian tissue was. The vet found that not all the ovarian tissue had been removed, what was left had migrated to her kidney, it was the size of a golf ball. Her kidney was producing large amount of eostrogen that was passing through her urine and causing her 'in season' behaviour.
ROTS is not as uncommon as you would think, approx 1 in 5 routine spay ops are affected. In a 1 bitch household the problem might go unoticed, but in a multi dog house it would be a big problem.
The cause is not due to poorly qualified or negligent veterinary surgeons but more to do with the procedure for cleanliness in carrying out the procedure.
If your vet has already carried out a 2nd exploratory op did he do it when the bitch was showing signs of being in season, if he didnt then I would get a second opinion, maybe from another vet, if an internal organ is being affected by the retained ovarian tissue that tissue will onl;y be enlarged when she is 'in season'.
Our vet accepted that his practice was responsible, the locum vet who carried out the initial procedure no longer worked there, the vet did not charge for the second op, meds or consultations.
Hope you get this sorted.

I have heard of several similar cases.

Thanks for this info, like you I have an entire male at home, and he is more affected than her, although I have no neighbours and I can put my girl to my daughters when she is showing these signs, she is going there this weekend.  I had her spayed because she has a small heart murmur and even though specialist said I could breed from her I decided not to.  I was starting to wander if I was the only dog owner to have this happen, I have been on a couple of breed list and no one had heard of it.  My vet doesn't want to do anything other than hormone injections, they haven't even refered me to a specialist.  I am so worried about her having another operation tho.

thanks again
