mildred had a c section this morning,vet says all 4 puppies came out alive but then he lost 3.What is going on here i saw the 3 that didnt survive they were all of good size and weight and perfectly formed why does life have to be so cruel ?  Have to give everything i got now into taking care of the little girl that made it,has this ever happened to anyone else ? iv'e just got so many What If's .

The pups may just have been inside mum for a bit too long, though I'm surprised that they died after coming out alive :-( I'm not a vet though, and he is probably the one to answer your questions. There may have been other factors that you don't know about.

Sorry for your loss, my misty had 11 a week ago today and we lost 4, 2 seemed healthy,although they were all small. Nearly all doubled there weight noe though.  My vet told me it was due to a traumatic delivery, she to also had a c-section.  I hope your little one and mummy are doing ok.  All the best

Nature can be very cruel, we had a lovely healthy litter (or so I thought) born in March, 7 lovely pups, vet brought 6 out to me - won't allow us in the op theatre which I personally am not happy about - put them in the heated box and went back to bring mum round, 1 hour later he came back out to tell us 2 of the pups which were sat on my lap in the box had been born with severe cleft palate and what did I want to do, and 1 little girl although born with a heart beat hadn't made it............only to be told 3 hours later she was in fact still alive, even after being put outside to be disposed of!!!

The 2 with CP I had to hand over to be PTS, I was sobbing my heart out - thankfully it was Easter weekend and the surgery was closed so nobody else there to see the state I was in.

I'm so sorry for your loss, it makes the one little pup extra special.  Hope mum and her baby are both doing well today.

Our girl 3 years ago had 7 pups ok but needed a C section to remove a large pup. All went well and the pup was big but had passed on due to being so long in cannel. Didnt think any more of it but that night she gave birth to another pup.........obvisouly dead due to anasthestic. She was checked again and all ok. She then went on to have yet another pup the following day (over 48 hours sine first pups),.
I created such a stink at the vets..turns out because she'd had the 7 already and the 1 removed they didnt check the other uterus horn for any more pups.

Maybe just my girls way though because the girl from the above litter had her pups 3 weeks ago and 5 days after 7 pups being born she gave birth to a dead little one. She had been vet checked and had had 5 doses of oxytosin

I do tell myself  at whelping time that nature does things for a reason but it isnt easy to accept.

Corsogirl not many vets will let you!  I had a c-section on my girl a few years ago.  She had one born naturally the other 3 born by c-section the next day. They looked fit and health but the nurses didn't seem to bother much to bring them round, mum and I sat in the waiting room doing it ourselves.  Luckily they did survive and were wonderful pups although I found out one died at only about 3 years of age and I don't know whether this had anything to do with it and never will.

i had a terrible time last year with my girls first litter, she had 2 naturally at home and then everything ceased, after 3 hrs she went in and had xrays, everything looked fine was given a oxy shot and sent home, she started labour again in the car and this pup was stuck fast, went straight back and between me and the vet finally got thid puppy out, sadly already dead, she then went on to have  another 6 in the vets with me with her then it all stopped again, finally she needed a c-section i was terrified and the vets delivered 3 more puppies totalling 12, two live and one huge anasarca puppy which had ruptured my poor girls uterus and caused all the problems, though she had a scan and xrays which didnt show this puppy. my girl needed 2 vets working on her to save her life and she pulled through, i was a mess by the end of that day, she is my absolute baby, we had her spayed, no way i was going to risk that again with my precious one!

it is very sad when you lose puppies but the main thing is that your girl is ok, i felt blessed to still have my baby.
i questioned myself for weeks over all the decisions made that day, there will always be what if's, i am sure you done everything right for your girl and that is the most important thing

Thanx to all you caring people who have replied.My vet wont allow you in on a section,My girl has no milk and there is no signs of any coming,shes had the oxy shot and still nothing she is in herself recovering very well,she wont have anything to do with her baby and because i want to give this baby the best chance she is now with a foster mum who has only the 1 pup and loads of milk,she accepted my little baby immediatly so pray to god that from here my little girl can thrive and survive.will keep you all informed of how things go.

Sorry to hear about your puppies - our only litter went very smoothly so I can't be sure, but I get the impression that the vet's priority is of course the bitch, and the puppies are often left to make it or not by themselves. Fair enough to attend to the bitch, but it would be nice for a vet nurse or to allow the owner in to make sure the puppies get going ok. :-(

I'm very sorry to read of your loss but sadly these things can happen - one of the many perils of breeding not always known by those who take on such a mammoth decision.  Try not to blame yourself or anyone else.

Some years ago a litter sired by one of my males resulted in a similar outcome.  The first puppy, very large, became stuck in the birth canal and the dam was taken in for emergency section.  The large puppy was dead before they reached the surgery and of four born by section sadly three succumbed to the affacts of the GA :(  This despite EVERY effort by the vet and attending nurses to revive the pups - the owners were on the premises and although completely distraught could not commend highly enough the efforts of all of the staff.  Like you, one baby made it, now a strong healthy adult with a character second to none and not in the least affected by being a singleton.

Thank God your bitch is OK and also her new little girl :)  Enjoy and cherish them.

my vets will only let you in on a c- section if they dont have enough people available, but then you would only be given  the job of looking after the pups. I lost 3 pups but had 5 live ones the 3 that didn't make it all looked so perfect

Iam so sorry to hear :( I would look at it that maybe there was something wrong and would have suffered as they got older...

When Tiva wasn't dropping her milk my vet just let her smell the oxy and that seemed to work- she didn't want to give her the shot if it wasn't needed cause it tends to make them sick. Yup def bottle feeding for 48hrs was hard work and would never wish that on anyone.

Sorry to hear your upsetting news.  My bitch had a caesarean and lost all 3 of the pups she was carrying, they had heart beats but couldnt be got going despite trying for 1.5 hours.  My bitch recovered well physically but emotionally found it difficult and it was distressing for us to watch her.  I felt I was never going to breed her again.  However, after seeking lots of advice (including on this forum), I decided to give a go again.  I did several things differently and she has very recently had 9 completely healthy puppies naturally with absolutely no intervention from the vet.  It may not seem so at the moment but nature has a way of sorting things out!  All the best of luck with your little girl and her mum.

Yes! I lost all mine c/section done to late. sounds like the same. I would want to know why you lost three born alive. If they hadn't got any deformatives. Mine had drowned before birth. I would always ask if ever having a c/section again what experience the attending nurse had. With an experienced rubber and oxygen, Why!!

I was with them helping with the pups so saw everything that went on.  The nurses couldn't get them to breathe, one of the puppies was completely blue and all their heart beats were faint, I think we were, as you said, just too late.  The vet tried dopram and eventually oxygen but just couldn't get them going.  My bitch had had a bleed at 8.30am which the vet didn't feel was anthing to worry about and the contractions didnt go beyond really light.  She had a c section at 2pm.  In hindsight I think the bleed was a placental separation, the placentas were black by the time we did a c section.  It was only my 2nd litter and the first had gone like clockwork so I wasn't experienced enough to know the signs.  Thanks to the replies I received on this forum last year which helped me come to the decision to try again.  It has been lovely seeing my girl with her puppies, she has been a fab mum!
