Rory, 6 month old Irish Setter puppy, has been on James Wellbeloved Lamb/Rice Puppy since I got him at 8 weeks old. I'm thinking he probably needs to change to a Junior Recipe, and as he has very smelly wind, I'm thinking of changing to something else.

Considering his age and his breed (very slow maturing) does anyone have any recommendations?

I've been looking at Arden Grange, but should I get the Puppy/Junior, which is Chicken/Rice or the Adult Lamb/Rice. There is only 3% difference in the protein levels and 2% difference in the oil levels. I'd prefer a Lamb/Rice recipe if possible. It's mind boggling trying to choose.

I'm not interested in BARF or RMB, I want to use a dry complete. :)

Hi Dawn, my 7 month pup has Arden Grange lamb and rice. I tried him with the puppy/junior but he wouldn't touch it!
I give it to him dry, wet or with naturediet added to vary his meals. He likes it so much he eats it one by one as treats as well :)

Since you haven't had many replies - I switched Caoimhe to adult food around that age. I don't know whether that would make you think it was OK or make you want to stick with junior. LOL You've seen how skinny she was. I say was because she's really filled out over the last month. I don't know whether it's the Arden Grange Premium I started using in late April or the fact I can feed more protein without dire rear - maybe she's just growing up. Anyway, her growth didn't change when I switched her to adult. She did get little extras like oily fish or a tablespoon of oil on her food as she's always needed to put on weight. The only reason I chose adult was because it was Laughing Dog tripe complete (I wanted to avoid rice for a little while) and that didn't come in a puppy/junior version. She's never been sick, never lacked energy or endurance and has managed to turn into a properly shaped adult right or wrong we did OK with the adult food.

Maybe this will bump the post up so more folks that have raised lots of dogs will reply.

Ok, although I now feed raw, when I DID feed kibble I changed over to Adult at 6 months (large slow maturing breed here aswell) if I remember rightly the adult has less protein? She was, at the time, on JWB but if I had to choose now it would be AG from the two.

much cheaper for me to raw feed my lot, and cos they love it so :)

Sorry not much help Dawn, but I would choose the Adult range (but that really is only my opinion for my dogs)

i spoke to a vet at work regarding my puppy, he has a phd in nutrition, and he said he wouldnt change to adult until at least 10months due to the calcium levels, as adult levels may not sufficiently allow the bone growth plates to fuse properly.

Dawn

My Gordon is on Purina pro Plan.  i started adding the performance range to his puppy about the 6 month mark and switched him to this fully about 9 months.   He's done really well on the purina, and certainly doesnt lack any bone (I'm sure rachelsetter can vouch for that - there's nothing delicate about him :))  Never had much problems with wind on it either

I also feed Pro Plan and switch to adult at around 10 months, they do a large breed puppy. I've got an 18 month old desperately lacking body, put him on Pro Plan performance and saw fantastic results in 2 weeks, now he's on a maitenance diet mix of performance and sensitive slamon and rice which is the next closest in terms of fat and oil, doing really well and on 2 CCs at 20 months!
