Topic Dog Boards / Health / 6 month cav Gizzy has been bitten!! help
- By gumi [gb] Date 14.06.08 18:39 UTC
Hiya

My cav got bitten on the face today by a terrier puppy ... :(

My fault the owner said his puppy snaps but I didnt know by saying snap he meant bite! I thought snap meant just being moody
and barking so I let my freindly cavalier say hello on his leash from a distance, then the terrier jumped and bit my puppy !  :(

My puppy caried on as normal and was wagging his tale trying to play as i took him away, then suddenly he stoped and was letting out sylivar and there was a bit of blood on his wound... Its on the top layer of his skin...

My Gizzy was taken to vet straight away they said it will heal.. put some antibiotics on it....

Now i know what snap means..... I wish the owner was more specific and said Bite but its not his fault i guess more mine i should have know what snap meant but I honestly didnt realise... I feel so guilty and sad for my pup even though he is running around fine.......A leason learnt.....

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help the wound heal faster?

I think you will be amazed at how fast dogs heal :-)
It's just one of those things that people do not all have the same descriptions for all the various severities of behaviour but by the sounds of things not too much harm done either physically or emotionally to your dog anyway.  I think you have been more affected but just put it behind you as something lived through and learned ie take someones word for it when they tell your their dog isn't friendly ;-)

Bathe it with salty water (a teaspoon of salt in half a pint of water) to clean it then leave it alone.

i know they are not all like that but i am scared now....

he starts his puppy school wednesday and i am real scared..

Well, yes, but you have learned that now :-).  If an owner indicates their dog is not friendly in anyway avoid them, there are plenty of friendly dogs in the world and hopefully you will meet many at the puppy school.  The more you mix with nice friendly dogs the more relaxed you will feel about things because I think the biggest issue now is that you don't transmit that fear to your dog whose confidence does not seem to have been affected.

Have a word with the trainer, they should be able to help you get your confidence back.

Whistler my cocker greets everyone, he did greet an old Border Collie bitch and she just took a big scratch off his nose. He screamed like he was maimed for life, it was mainly fear as no one had ever snapped him. I jst left it alone and about a month later realised it had gone, or rather his fur had grown back. It seemed to take ages, but our BC licked him a few times and he healed with no scar. He is a bit more cautious now but not much, still thinks everyone should love him!!
