Topic Dog Boards / Health / Kennel Cough...when to seek treatment

My boys have kennel cough. One had symptoms for a few days and it has seemed to clear up. The other who is 18months is still badly coughing after 3 days and bringing up loads of foamy phlegm. I usually take them to work with me but left him home with hubby yesterday. When I came home I saw out our back yard at least a dozen pools he had coughed up and in one of the other dog beds was a HUGE pool of watery mess I can only assume he drank water then coughed so much he upchucked.

I know KC usually clears up on it own....but how do you know if a secondary infection has set in ...and how long from the onset of KC does that happen?  He will go to the vets of course if he needs to but I know if I take him they will give antibiotics as a precaution and I dont really agree with doing that.  This is why i am asking what other symptoms should I be on the look out for.

personally I would see a vet asap he may be suffering more than your other dogs a dozen pools would put a terrible strain on him unfortunately sometimes we need to use medication.

Have you tried Benylin ( non drowsy ) it's excellant for treating Kennel Cough , my vet advised me to give it at the first sign , they usually only need a couple of doses.

Think, in any situation with your dog, if you think your dog needs to see a vet then it probable does. No one can judge as well as the owner when their dog is in need of treatment and better too soon than too late. Vets never laugh as anxious owners they would rather you seek advice early.

Don't take the dog into the waiting room tell the receptionist that your dog is caughing and leave in the car till the vet tells you what to do.
