My bullmastiff bitch never produced any milk until her pupies were born. My English Shepherd produces milk from about day 56. Jackie

One of my girls never produced milk at all, not a drop, thankfully she was the only one.  I have found once labour starts the milk normally comes down if it hasn't before.

I've had bitches with no milk hours prior to birth.  The suckling of the newborns will bring the milk down.

she was showing all the signs, had a c section today and  there was 4 puppies 3 girls and a boy but they only got 1 girl breathing im totally devestated ,just burst out crying in the vets seeing them lifeless babies is going to haunt me for a long time.pup and mum are doing really well, shes accepted the pup but just has nothing to give it.so we have just the 1 ,poor baby is suckling like hell and still the milk aint coming, vet gave her an injection to get it flowing but there's nothing! having to bottle feed this little one.Cant get it into my head why the others didn't make it they were all a good weight and size perfect in everyway so what went wrong ? may i just add they aint ddb's hence the name.

So sorry to hear about this.  Don't give up on the milk though.  It can take a day or so after a c section for milk to come in.  Keep attaching the little girl and I'm sure that it will come down in time.

Just don't give up yet.  Charmer took nearly a week after her section to lactate fully, she had a bad time and it was pretty traumatic. However in the end she fed and cared for them beautifully.

Keep the pup feeding from mum, if she will let it. Give her a meal or treat to distract and relax her while feeding. Offer top-ups after the pup has sucked as good strong sucks will help the milk to come in. The other thing you can try if she is a bit upset is Rescue Remedy... I'm sure it helps!

The main thing is to keep calm and quiet and don't let her pick up on your anxiety.

Good luck. x

Last year a friends bitch had a litter after the Vets had said she was not in whelp, and in fact had treated her with Galastop to dry up the milk from what they considered a phantom.

She had five pups, and had no milk for a week, pups were allowed to suckle non stop and then were topped up with formula until the milk came in.
