Topic Other Boards / Foo / oh how i sobbed!
- By Astarte Date 12.06.08 20:05 UTC
so, watched "I am Legend" today, i won't say for those who've not seen it but those who have will understand why i started sobbing... this and a discussion on the boards a few days ago about "Turner and Hooch" have got me thinking, what are your saddest films with animals? also what are your happiest?

for me saddest animal film ever (and scariest..) is "Watership down"- so not a kids movie! and probably my fav is "homeward bound", its very uplifting.
- By deansami [gb] Date 12.06.08 20:11 UTC
oh yes, i was so upset, that dog, oh. my heart melted down when i saw the distraught face on will smith, apart from that, the film was a crap ending, the rest was brill,
- By Astarte Date 12.06.08 20:14 UTC
was a decent wee watch but not amazing. atonement tonight i think :) heard its good.
- By Carrington Date 12.06.08 20:42 UTC
Scariest dog film I think has got to be Cujo.

Watership down was the first book I ever read, and yes, I love the film.

The Lassies are always good for a blubber,

- By sugar [in] Date 12.06.08 21:13 UTC
Ring of Bright Water - watched it when I was younger but always remember that it made me cry.

> the film was a crap ending, the rest was brill,

totally agree - I loved the film (I am Legend), but the ending let it down :( I've still watched it several times though :)

watership down is one of my favourite books, and the film/book always makes me cry. the book of black beauty always gets me as well, poor ginger.
homeward bound is really sad THEN uplifting, even although i know what happens, i cry!
basically if an animal is in it, im guaranteed to cry!
just read marley and me, i sobbed my heart out reading that, very sad at the end.
- By LouiseDDB [gb] Date 12.06.08 22:43 UTC
I read marley and me and cried loads, i think the pages needed to be water proof. Going to get some similar ones soon, afew recommended in your dog. Was very sad, but ever so lovely

Watership: At first wasn't sure what movie you were talking about lol then looked on Utubehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_5I9izys2ek&feature=related     and yup totally remember that movie- very good- I really enjoyed that movie- sad for sure- believe even my kids watched it but didn't quite understand it...
- By satincollie (Moderator) Date 12.06.08 23:52 UTC
Well I may just show my age but The Yearling is one of my favorite tear jerkers although must just say it was quite an old film when I first watched LOL
- By Crespin Date 13.06.08 00:18 UTC
8 Below is a good movie, I did cry at the end.  Anyone thats seen that movie, will know why.  Such heart touching!!!!

Best in Show - that one was good, but it scared me, because on the off chance people watch it and think everyone who shows dogs is like that lol

Homeward Bound - very nice movie, cried like crazy at points

as a kid, it was Lady and the Tramp.  For some reason I cried with that one.  It was good, until my teacher from college had me do a feminist analysis of it, and it ruined the whole movie for me.

Scary movies??  Havent seen any scary movies with animals, unless you consider a werewolf an animal lol.  I am not really into scary movies.
- By calmstorm Date 13.06.08 05:32 UTC
I remember crying through the film and on the bus home with mum and gran after seeing Bambie (why does the mum or a close family member have to die all the time in Walt Disney) and the same again with The Incredable Journey (Homeward Bound the first time round) think they stopped taking me after that ;)

First book I remember reading that upset me in some parts was Black Beauty, especially the Poor Ginger chapter, but the ending of the book is cheerful. I read the book so often I almost knew it off by heart! When I watched the film kept saying....the book wasnt like that, that didnt happen like that, he didnt do that etc :) :) Like ya do when you'v read the book then see the film ;)

Cujo is scary because it could actually happen.

Fox and Hound made me jump and scared my lad (well he was young) when the bear suddenly jumped out by the tree over the ravine...
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 13.06.08 08:17 UTC
Oh Turner and Hooch gets me every time. Also, Lady & the tramp & Lassie

> Watership down was the first book I ever read, and yes, I love the film.

I could only read half of watership down, I couldn't be bothered with all the rabbit folklore bits - I think they were maybe in italics and were easy to skip to get to the next action bit with Hazel and co :-D  Did you read Plague dogs by the same author? That book was so disturbing, I can still remember the scene where rowf was drowned and brought back to life repeatedly to test his stamina :-(

Cujo is definitely the scariest animal film/book I've ever seen/read. I read it again just a couple of years ago and had to put all the dogs out my bedroom before I could sleep!!
- By Lozi [gb] Date 13.06.08 09:26 UTC
What about "Ring of bright water".

Its a beautiful film about an otter but really sad, it made me cry.
- By Whistler [gb] Date 13.06.08 10:15 UTC
The incredible journey, Lassie, Ring of Bright Water & Kes as well.
- By Rach85 [gb] Date 13.06.08 10:30 UTC
Black Beauty the film with Sean Bean has me sobbing all the way through lol I love that film, the way its filmed is so beautiful with the understanding between horse and man and so sad when Ginger dies, im nearly crying now!
Watership down is another favourite :)
Also Cujo is my scariest animal film, my OH Matt wont watch it again lol

Most uplifting animal film is Free Willy, I love all 3 but havent seen them for years now.
- By Chloe101 Date 13.06.08 10:37 UTC
Shiloh both films thought they were really sad.
- By Carrington Date 13.06.08 10:52 UTC
There was a horror film not so long ago about an Island of dog inhabitants (gorgeous GSD's mainly) who were wild man hunters, and killed a load of camping teenagers, it was supposed to be a horror, but I kept annoying my boys saying, oh look at that one, oh that one is beautiful. :-D :-D
- By dexter [gb] Date 13.06.08 11:05 UTC
I cried my eyes out to Turner and Hooch love that film, Lassie, and Eight Below, i am pathetic :) i can't watch it again .. ..... lovely dogs though.
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 13.06.08 11:20 UTC
saddest ever has to be

the scene where Bambi's mother gets killed

followed closely by

the scene where Dumbo gets rocked in his mum's trunk

I don't do sad dog films ever !! I had to be removed from the cinema for howling at the bambi scene above when I was really little, howled at Lassie and still can't watch the original Incredible Journey, though the newer one is OK.

Loved Eight below though :-)
- By lumphy [gb] Date 13.06.08 11:51 UTC
The incrediable journey gets me ever time even though I know the old dog is ok as I have seen it so many times. Another one which i cant watch again is The Lion, the witch and the wardrobe I think it was actually called Narnia?? . My GSD boy always reminded me of a lion and I said many times he would lay down his life for me and the kids. When the lion did it in the film I was gutted.

Another one is a recent one I think it was called the Sea Monkey it was about the lock ness monster. I was a right soggy mess after that and again it was the thought of the monster coming back to save the little boy.

I once had a boyfriend I was really keen on, when he cried at the end of Pete's dragon I swapped him for a more manly one... ah fickle youth..
- By Freds Mum [gb] Date 13.06.08 12:14 UTC
How cruel whistler :-)    i dumped someone once for.....being too nice. Everything i said he agreed with, every argument he let me win, everything i wanted i could have. Although we moan about men we need a bit of a challenge. My friends thought i was crazy but i told them if i wouldnt something that would roll over and give me puppy dog eyes all the time i'd buy a labrador :-)  How mean we are :-)
- By madogz77 Date 13.06.08 12:18 UTC
i cried in eight below when he found his old dog still chained up, made me think he listened when he said stay!!! :-(
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.06.08 12:41 UTC

>My GSD boy always reminded me of a lion and I said many times he would lay down his life for me and the kids. When the lion did it in the film I was gutted.

CS Lewis made it a very good allegory of the Christian message, didn't he?
- By sara1bee [gb] Date 13.06.08 13:19 UTC
homeward bound??!!! you should watch the original film -the incredible journey- i wept buckets
- By dexter [gb] Date 13.06.08 13:27 UTC

I always have a box of tissues at the ready for Lassie and Born Free.
- By newf3 [gb] Date 13.06.08 17:56 UTC
born free is without douet THE saddest film i have EVER watched.
i cry every time.
- By Freewayz [gb] Date 13.06.08 20:36 UTC
For me I think it had to be Old Yeller.....I am from America so not sure if they had that here. I am not THAT old but every now and again they play it on classics TV and it is soooo sad....
- By Polo Date 13.06.08 20:39 UTC
Yeah, brilliant. Love the lamb bit at the end of The Dawn Treader. (oops, replying to JG)
- By Astarte Date 13.06.08 20:47 UTC
on the c.s. lewis theme, how good does Prince Caspian look? frankly how yummy does prnce caspian look!? (my thread, figure i can hijack :))
- By Polo Date 13.06.08 20:49 UTC
LOL. He's welsh I think in the film? lovethe accent, miss it now I've moved to England. He looks different to how I imagined him but just as cute.
- By Jeangenie [gb] Date 13.06.08 20:55 UTC

>Love the lamb bit at the end of The Dawn Treader. (oops, replying to JG)

It's very cleverly done; once you notice the connection (and it was deliberate) you can read more and more messages in the stories.
- By Polo Date 13.06.08 20:58 UTC
C S Lewis was a clever guy though, wasn't he. You can just read the books over and over again. Yeah, different bits of the Bible illustrated in there, I love it. :-)
- By Dakkobear [gb] Date 13.06.08 21:09 UTC
He was brilliant indeed, although I didn't really notice the allegories in the Lion the witch and the wardrobe until I had read The Magicians Nephew and then you wonder how you missed them :-)
- By Freedom2010 [gb] Date 14.06.08 11:00 UTC
Old Yeller and Run Wild, Run Free - I cried so much at this I was physically sick and still can't think about it without crying!
- By Debussy [gb] Date 14.06.08 19:58 UTC
I was trying to remember that name: Run Wild Run Free!  That was the one about the deaf boy who saved his pony from the quicksand wasn't it?  I remember that in the 70's and it made me howl!  He cried "Philip" didn't he?

Re. CS Lewis.  Remember the end of 'The Last battle'?  When he tells them of their fate?  Chilling, and uplifting at the same time.
- By skyblue22 [gb] Date 15.06.08 20:34 UTC
What about "Born Free" for the oldies amongst us? I cried buckets at that when I was little.
- By huskypup [us] Date 16.06.08 12:52 UTC
Watched 8 Below for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and yes, when they returned and he found the oldie of the pack had stayed, especially since it was the first stake out he checked, but then the mixed emotions when he found that there were no other dogs still attached.  Talk about blubbing!

I loved the horse in Cat Balou (if anyone is old enough to remember that film with Lee Marvin).  The only animal in a film that I scared me was the cat/panther/human in Cat People  (another oldie(s) remade in the eighties).
