at what age do you normally start weaning? or what kind of signs says they are ready?

I don't start weaning before 3 weeks unless it's a very large litter; then I start a couple of days earlier.

oh well i was thinking three weeks however there is 9 puppys so il start on saturday, any other tips for me? the more the better, as you know, this my first litter so all help is needed

The first thing to do when weaning pups is,,,,,,,,,
PUT AN APRON ON!!!  ha ha ha
Things can get real messy when pups first start eating, they will lay in it, walk in it, splash it everywhere, tip the tray up etc;
It is great fun though!
I will be weaning mine in a weeks time, I start with very basic puppy porridge in a big tray and bring the pups to it, still in the whelping room, letting them get a sniff of it etc:
when They have got into the porridge, I then start gradually adding good quality beef mince, scrambled egg made with puppy formula milk not cows milk, and their complete puppy food, making sure things are mushy so it is easier for pups to digest.
then once they start getting more teeth and more active I then do the food so that they can chew a bit.

Sorry to drag this one back up, but thought it better than starting a new thread. 

Is 4 weeks too old to start weaning?  My litter were 3 weeks yesterday, but all seem really content and are gaining weight, mum is happy feeding them, so I was going to leave it until next weekend, but I am not sure now.

i started weaning my litter 2days before they were 3weeks, i was told that most ppl wean at 3weeks,
