can anybody advise what is safe flea and worm treatment for a brood bitch. i have been recommended stronghold. is there any knowledge as to the LONG TERM effect on a brood bitch. have always used frontline spot on and dorontel. any ideas
- By Floradora [gb] Date 14.02.08 14:12 UTC
If the bitch is not in whelp I treat the same as the other dogs, every 3 months Drontal and Frontlined. I do not have any information regarding the long term health affects on a brood bitch but I know that GDBA do not treat their brood bitches either by worming or flea treating whilst they are pregnant but they worm pre-mate.
Whilst the bitch is in whelp I treat with panacur daily from day 40 gestation to 2 days post whelp however I have not flea treated any bitches whilst in whelp. I am always guarded regarding topical treatments during whelp as chemicals are absorbed and I wouldn't feel happy using advocate, Advantage or frontline spot on whilst I had a bitch in whelp.

Hi Little Jayne,

I would not use frontline will a bitch is in whelp or will she is feeding. I would not use any flea treatment on or around any pregnant bitch!

For worming I have used use panacur favourites for a few years. If you look on the back of any packaging it shoulg state if it is safe to use on pregnant bitches. If it doesn't say this then do not use, ring the company or your vet and ask advise.

Frontline is safe to use on pregant bitches and the spray from a couple of weeks old on puppies

Panacur is the only wormer licensed for pregnant bitches in the UK.  Like Floradora I have used daily from day 40 with no problems ever.  I did ask my vet about flea treatments with a bitch last year, and he actually read up on it while I was there.  He told me to use Frontline spray, not spot on.  I did, and she whelped easily and naturally with no ill effects to her 2 pups (which I can't wait to show!)

My vet tonight has just given me 2 tablets of Milbemax by Novartis to give my pregnant bitch that is 6 weeks pregnant. I specifically said now is this safe for her and they said yes. But so far all I have read on these message boards are that everybody uses Panicur. I havent given it her yet and I dont think I will be unless I hear from anybody our there that says they have used it and its fine. Can I buy this Panicur of the web and where?

I found the cheapest place for Panacur liquid (10%) was hyperdrug.com.
I gave it to Pippa from day 40 and she will have her last dose tonight but a puppy breeder I know said I should worm the pups at 2 weeks with drontal.

In the official datasheet for Milbemax it states:

Pregnancy and lactation
MILBEMAX can be used in breeding dogs including pregnant and lactating bitches.

I too give Panacur from day 40, but when pups are 2 weeks, they are given Panacur for 3 days.  Then another 3days at 5 weeks and 8 weeks.
