i've just done something really stupid. I was putting some Johnson's ear drops in Decoy, my springers, ears, as they've been a bit dirty and gritty, just as I was about to do second ear he shaked his head and tried to back away, as I went to grab him, I held onto him with one hand , the other hand still holding the open bottle of drops stupid or what, and a couple of drops plopped into his eye, i can't believe how stupid I am , it took a split second of thoughtlessness. can anyone advise me, does he need to go straight to the vets, I've bathed it and it looks red, are they harmful. on the box it just says keep out of eyes but not what happens if you dont, it contains pyrethrins 0.10% and piperonyl butoxide 1.00% and chlorocresol bp .20% can anyone help, his eye shut straight away and the third eyelid closed over, i bathed it with loads of water and its open now, although a bit red. anyone know??

Julie,
Sorry, don't know but why not just give the vet a call. They may be able to tell you over the phone.

hi dot

just spoke to the vet, panick over :D the ingredient to worry about was the first, kill mites etc, its an active ingredient apparently, he says to keep bathing, at least four more times every half any hour and he should be fine, obviously if anything happens i'll get back to him. thanks again for answering so promptly, i was in full panick mode :o

I'm sure he will be fine Julie but it might help to know that to irrigate an eye properly you need to get about a litre of fluid through it. If you can get hold of a syringe I would sit out on the back step with a bowl of cooled water out of the kettle and gently syringe it into one corner of the eye.

Isabel the best way with a person is to hold the eye (and associated bits of head :-)) under a running tap. Don't know how it would work for a dog though, so I keep a couple of litres of dsline and giving sets (not just for irrigating eyes, but for emergency IVs too).

I would normally use a giving set too Sharon I totally made up the syringe bit :) as the only alternative I could think of.

Julie, don't want to disagree with your vet - I'm a human ophthalmologist not a vet - but depending on the concentration, Pyrethrum (the active ingredient) could cause a corneal reaction or even a uveitis. The good news is that the concentration was probably low, and the amount small. Still, if it was my dog, I'd apply fucithalmic ointment four times a day, and if the eye is red or irritated, add steroid drops. I'd also forget the bathing - one *good* irrigation is enough, any more will just cause more irritation.

thanks everyone,

i've got some fucithalmic cream in the cupboard i will use it for a couple of days, just in case. it just takes a split second for something to go wrong doesn't it? :(

Julie why not use the fucithalmic cream, I am sure Sharon knows what she is talking about. To be honest (and I know this may not go down well) I have never seem any credible researched evidence that homeopathy is effective. I don't think you can mess about with eyes if you have any reservations about following Sharon's advice and I really don't think you should have, why not speak to your vet again?

i've just put in some fucithalmic cream, his eye isn't red anymore, i irrigated it once more before the cream just to make sure. He seems fine, i'll see how he is is the morning, if its red or irritated i'll speak to the vet again. thanks sharon! and everyone else! :) I meant homeopathic for the ears, my springer has really really tiny ear openings, and therefore they get mucky. I really appreciate all the advice, thanks again :)

Julie,

I'm glad Sharon saw your post. It eases the panic when you get someone who knows what they're talking about to help you :)
Glad he seems alright.

hi dot and sharon

Decoy's eye is looking good this morning, i'm keeping up with the cream, and may well take him to the vets just to make sure tomorrow. still kicking myself. I'm so glad i had the board to ask, it really helps when you are just so unsure of what to do for the best. :) thank you so much :):):):):D julie
